Give A Shit About Nature

Every plastic ring you cut keeps a sea turtle from being strangled by it. Six-pack rings, the plastic loops around water bottle multipacks, the rings on milk jugs, the loops on dog treat bags. Every one of them is a snare for an animal that fits its head through the loop and can't get its head back out. Wildlife rehabbers see seabirds, otters, seals, fawns, and turtles brought in with rings cut into their necks, growing into the flesh as the animal kept growing. The fix is one cut, with kitchen scissors, before you throw it in the recycling. Snip every loop. Two seconds. Done. The "biodegradable" rings introduced in the 1990s solve almost nothing. They take months to break down in the right conditions and longer than that in the ocean, where most of them end up. The cut is what protects the animal between now and whenever the plastic actually disappears. This is one of the small acts that doesn't feel like much when you're doing it and adds up to a lot. Every ring you cut is one that can't trap anything. The ones you didn't cut are still out there.

For years, greyhound racing in New Zealand continued under growing pressure. On the surface, it looked like a regulated sport trying to improve. But behind the scenes, the numbers kept telling a different story. In 2021 alone, around 900 racing greyhounds were injured and more than 200 died. And even after the industry was put on notice, reports continued to show thousands of injuries and dozens of deaths in the following years. At some point, the question stopped being about improvement. It became about whether it should exist at all. In December 2024, the New Zealand government made that decision. Greyhound racing would be banned, with a structured 20-month phase-out to shut the industry down completely. By 2026, that process is now reaching its final stage. Officials were clear about why. Injury rates remained consistently high despite years of reforms, reviews, and promises of change. The focus now has shifted to what happens next. Around 2,900 greyhounds still need to be rehomed. That’s one of the biggest challenges, and also one of the most important parts of the transition. Shelters, adoption groups, and welfare organizations are working to make sure these dogs don’t fall through the cracks. At the same time, there are over 1,000 people whose jobs are tied to the industry. For them, this isn’t just a policy change. It’s a complete shift in their livelihood, which is why support programs and job transition plans are part of the shutdown. Not everyone agrees with the decision. Industry representatives argue that progress was being made and that the ban ignores those improvements. But for many others, especially animal welfare groups, this moment has been a long time coming. Because in the end, the conversation kept coming back to the same thing. How many injuries are too many before something has to change?

A substance believed to be rat poison has been found throughout Parkhurst Forest on the Isle of Wight. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says since February it has received a number of new reports of dogs falling ill after ingesting a substance in the woodland. Dog walkers have reported seeing the poison when walking their dogs from the Marks Corner end of the Forest, but police say it could be found anywhere. Neighbourhood officers are continuing patrols throughout Parkhurst Forest and contacting local stockists of rat poison. They are also working with the Forestry Commission. It's not the first time such incidents have been reported, following similar incidents in 2021.

Heartbreaking footage captured dogs being rounded up and tossed into vans for alleged mass killings in Morocco as the country prepares for the 2030 World Cup. Since the North African country was ratified as a host in December 2024, campaigners say the slaughterings have surged dramatically, with around 500,000 dogs believed to be slain each year.

@NiallHarbison You can't put an animal to sleep because they are blind. You don't do it to a human. Why would you do it to a dog? My rabbit is 9 and totally blind. He gets by very well by smell, sound and using his whiskers. We leave everything in the room in the same place and he is happy ❤️

5️⃣ It's hard to believe but Rocky has now been here for five days and I think today is the most incredible he has ever looked 💤 I had a lot of messages and suggestions that maybe it would be better to put Rocky asleep when I first found him on Saturday 🐕 I think you can see from his whole body language, his wagging tail, and how hungry he is that this is a dog that very much wants to live 🍣 Every day we have a little routine where I change his bandana and bring him some smoked salmon and poached chicken. It's a little boy's picnic and it's the most magical time, sitting in the sun, you could ever imagine. 👀 We're slowly getting towards a stage where we might be able to do more for him with his eyes but there's no rush on that because he has so many ailments. What I am noticing is that he's fantastic at navigating around using my voice, the smell of food, and by learning the different types of grass and trees in his small area There's a lot of bad news in the world and doom and gloom. Rocky might just be one little individual street dog in Thailand but I really think he's helping put a smile not just on my face but on people around the world. A truly special little creature is Mr. Rocky ❤️

Eight-year-old Thistle Ask was sadly euthanised at Sandown last Saturday after fracturing a shoulder on the seventh fence of the Celebration Chase. This is the reality of horse racing and the death toll will continue to rise while the cruel sport is allowed to carry on.

“How many elephants do you want?” 🐘💔 Trophy hunting outfitters boast at exhibition “by hunters, for hunters”. ❗By allowing trophy imports, the UK enables this cruelty. It’s time to end the UK’s role in trophy hunting, once and for all.

Heart-breaking footage shows terrified dogs being rounded up for mass slaughter in Morocco ahead of the 2030 World Cup, municipal workers in Marrakesh use clamp-like devices to pin screaming animals to the ground, drag them by the neck and hurl them into trucks as they howl in agony, others are snared with catcher poles wrapped tight around their throats and shoved into vans during brutal clean-up operations, thousands more are simply shot or poisoned with the killings surging since Morocco won co-hosting rights in December 2024, around 500,000 street dogs are slaughtered every year and campaigners fear up to three million could now be wiped out to make cities look prettier for tourists and FIFA fans, authorities claim they run a Trap Neuter Vaccinate Release programme but animal groups call the facilities killing stations and say it's all a sham, this living nightmare is happening right now with children forced to watch the violence on their streets, They are supposed to be mans best friend and now Morocco betrays them just for a "cleaner image" for the World Cup Complete betrayal
