🇺🇸 “BACK TO CLASS?” FSU STUDENTS SLAM DECISION TO REOPEN DAYS AFTER DEADLY SHOOTING Florida State University plans to resume classes Monday—just four days after a mass shooting killed two and injured seven. The decision has sparked outrage among students and faculty. The suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, reportedly used his stepmother’s sheriff-issued service weapon. He was shot by police and remains hospitalized. FSU President Richard McCullough: “Our hearts are heavy after the tragedy that took place April 17. We are grieving with the families and friends who lost someone they love. This has shaken all of us, and I want you to know: We are here for you. Classes and business operations will resume Monday, April 21.” But many students say it’s way too soon. Junior Madelynn Duggar: “I have classes that are right by where the shooting occurred and I doubt I will be able to focus. It is very difficult to focus and take exams in the same places where days before you were barricading the door and making your peace with God.” Freshman Elizabeth Palmer: “Even though most of us weren’t physically at the scene, we all saw it. I can’t walk past the exact area where I saw a girl laying in a pool of blood. It’s traumatizing.” FSU professor Paul Renfro also criticized the move in an email to McCullough: “We all need more time to grieve the community members we have lost and to process the chaos and confusion that engulfed our beloved campus just two days ago.” Madison Askins, a 23-year-old graduate student who was shot in the back while running away. She played dead and is now recovering in the hospital, awaiting surgery. Adding insult to injury, a viral video showed a person calmly sipping coffee while walking past a bleeding victim—widely believed to be Askins—lying on the ground. For many students, the trauma is still raw—and reopening campus so quickly feels less like resilience and more like denial. Source: Newsweek, @paulmrenfro
