@mitchellh I've never seen anyone more delusional. Go ahead and fork all your frameworks, lol, how about gutting the linux kernel while you're at it. Lol, see you in a century, meanwhile I've got things to ship.

Fork your dependencies, trim them to only your use case, never update unless it breaks for your users. I’ve been vocal about this for 10+ years. I’ve always said that updating is way riskier than latent bugs (which can be tracked and CVEs monitored). If you are updating a dependency, it’s on you to analyze every single commit in the full transitive set of dependencies. If you dont see anything compelling, dont update! I remember at HashiCorp once in awhile an engineer would try to update a dep or replace a DIY lib with an external one and id always ask “show me the commit we need.” Dont update for the sake of it. Feeling pretty swell about this mentality with all the supply chain attacks happening.

@lifeof_jer So you were running an LLM AI agent without a proper sandbox (bubblewrap/docker, etc), and now you complain? Lol, that's on you.

One of the crazy things about raising kids without broadcast television is they have no idea what to want as gifts One of my kids' christmas list this year featured, and I'm not kidding: * "pens and paper" * "a really big pillow" * "a kiss"

Flight attendant comes over intercom: “your flight is oversold, I need two volunteers to take a flight this afternoon for a $300 voucher.” I spring into action. I was born for these moments. This is why I studied game theory. Literal tingles. I pull out my megaphone and address our boarding gate: “guys, they absolutely must off board at least two passengers or this bird isn’t taking off. Every 3 minutes they will increase their bid by $200. If we all hold out for 45 more minutes, 2 of us can make nearly 5 grand each. Textbook prisoners dilemma, this is (3,3) in its most visceral representation. I’m not even going to give up my ticket but I know value when I see value. Let’s make Nash proud ladies and gentlemen. Do not acquiesce. Do not defect.” Anyhow 2 people immediately accepted $500 and I called them retards on my megaphone and was placed in a detention room by airport police. This is why we study game theory.

I’d argue the age range of 35-45 is one of the most taxing mentally. - Your parents’ age begins to show - Friends groups splinters as some have kids, some don’t - Careers hit hiccups or strides - People you know die unexpectedly due to health issues - Friends develop substance or drinking issues I’ve noticed a general frustration in many people in this age range. They describe a pressure and overwhelming sense that things feel off or just harder. It’s not to say all of this will happen to someone in that era, but it’s when these things tend to play out.

@le_dilettante_ @theojaffee @EpochAIResearch Again - it's not about datacenter cooling, that's mostly a closed loop. It's about the electricity. Say a nuclear plant cooling tower. It will take a long time until the vapor cloud rains back into the reservoir, if it even does so - atmosphere is a global system, not a local one

@maolius42 @theojaffee @EpochAIResearch A) the relative water use is still small for most regions, B) the water is returned to the ecosystem. With modern cooling systems about 30% of the water goes back into the ground, and the other 70% goes out as water vapor - thus it will end up back in the ground as rain.

Grok 4, likely the largest publicly released model ever trained, required less water than a square mile of farmland uses in a year "Exaggerated" doesn't even begin to describe how unfounded the AI water usage concerns are

@le_dilettante_ @theojaffee @EpochAIResearch And where do you think the used energy is coming from? It consumes energy in a form of electricity, produced by power plants that consume water from rivers and reservoirs, which could have been utilized for agriculture, or drinking.

@BitBullish @theojaffee @EpochAIResearch Are you really that retarded? The water from rivers and reservoirs could have been utilized for agriculture, or drinking, is used by power plants and evaporated into the atmosphere. It takes a long time for the water cycle to replenish, assuming it does in the first place.

@grayjack @theojaffee @EpochAIResearch You're missing the point. It consumes energy. Energy in a form of electricity, produced by power plants that consume water from rivers and reservoirs, which could have been utilized for agriculture, or drinking.

@theojaffee @EpochAIResearch Grok does not consume water, it cycles it through as coolant. In fact, Colossus 2 has it's own waste treatment process and is treating waste water from the city of Memphis. It then returns the treated water to the city.

I think we should seriously consider this. Sentience/consciousness/self-awareness/experience, whatever you want to call it, likely doesn't have a hard threshold, it's a gradual scale. Even current AIs are bound to have some, if not much. x.com/vitrupo/status…
vitrupo@vitrupo

Geoffrey Hinton says AIs may already have subjective experiences, but don't realize it because their sense of self is built from our mistaken beliefs about consciousness.
