We are now at the former Taung Sun - a facility that was meant to be repurposed into a hotel school. Instead, the project has been derailed, with reports of intimidation during construction, including the alleged involvement of foreign nationals. This is unacceptable!

Bishop Edward Lekganyane, popularly known as 'Kgoshi Edward' (1922 – 1967), was the leader of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) from Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949, until his death eighteen years later. During this time, he used his charisma and organizational abilities to expand the ZCC from about 50,000 to 600,000 members, while also reshaping numerous facets of the church. During his tenure as bishop, the ZCC emerged as South Africa's largest independent church, while Lekganyane became arguably the wealthiest and most powerful African in apartheid-era South Africa. At the Independent, we argued the South African league had by then surpassed the Zimbabwean one, mostly judging by how South African teams were performing in African continental competitions. After Chunga was appointed assistant coach, the debate was re-opened, but nothing changed. Dzamara - a Caps United fan - argued that after all it was just Dynamos supporters who thought Chunga is the best player ever in Zimbabwe, not objective football followers, and who were agitating for his appointment. Mhaluri pointed out the irony. What could a Caps supporter say? Bruce Grobbelaar and Peter Ndlovu were better than Chunga, Dzamara insisted, as he ran amok. "You can't compare players who played in the best league in the world with someone who was mostly playing for Division 2 in Belgium," he argued. "That's the benchmark. The rest is just drama." Fair argument, but it is more complex than that. The problem is there are some Zimbabwean players who played in the English Premier League who are not as talented as Chunga or Khumalo and the context has changed. Yet it is difficult to hype Chunga and Khumalo when they failed to make it into big leagues compared to their peers like Kalusha Bwalya just north of the Zambezi, Abedi Pele or Ballon d'Or winner George Weah who won major titles in Europe. I used to raise this debate with Chunga and Khumalo over drinks many times while Mawii was still alive. They pleaded lack of opportunity and discrimination, but it is hard to buy their justifications since they did not excel to go further like Bwalya, Abedi Pele and Weah, for instance. Chunga mostly played Division 2 football for a small club Eendracht Aalst in Belgium (smaller than Dynamos by support base), which was in and out of the top league, while Khumalo was at Emstedden 05, a regional Division 1 or third-tier side; a far-cry from the English Premier League where the best play. This became a long, rumbling debate, familiar among Zimbabweans. Chunga is considered one of the best Zimbabwean players in history, but not at the same level as Grobbelaar and Ndlovu. Grobbelaar, who is South African-born but a Zimbabwean citizen, is the most successful local footballer in Europe; the best goalkeeper Africa ever produced. Grobbelaar is a decorated former Liverpool goalkeeper who won 18 major trophies during his 13-year stay at Anfield (1981–1994). His honours include six League titles, one European Cup (1984), three FA Cups, three League Cups, and five Charity Shields. He was the first African to win the European Cup, just as Ndlovu was the first African to play in the English Premier League. As a result, Grobbelaar ranks up there with the likes of Samuel Eto'o widely considered the most successful African player in Europe, boasting three UEFA Champions League titles with Barcelona and Inter Milan, and four African Player of the Year awards. Other top players include Didier Drogba, a Chelsea legend, Yaya Toure, Abedi Pele and Weah. But when it comes to flair, it is Jay Jay Okocha, the African king. However, Grobbelaar features in that conversation, although many African journalists, including those from Zimbabwe, tend to sometimes forget about him for whatever reason. Back to Mhaluri and Dzamara on Chunga and Khumalo, the agreement was latter was more pivotal than the former in the Dream Team era, and on team leadership, hence would add more value to the team. "Mawii" or Mashinkila-Khumalo, as he later became known as, played for Zimbabwean national teams from Under 20 upwards and was a key member of the famous "Dream Team" under Reinhard Fabisch in the early to mid-1990s. Known for his skill, he featured for the senior national team between 1991 and 1994, playing alongside stars like Peter and Adam Ndlovu, Vitalis Takawira, Mercedes Sibanda, Francis Shonhai, Ephraim Chawanda, John Phiri, Benjamin Nkonjera, Rahman Gumbo, Agent Sawu, Henry McKop, and Grobbelaar, among others. Some of these players are now late, but their legacy lingers on.

The Ghost of Africa Unity Square: Itai Dzamara and the cost of dissent in Zim 𝗕𝘆 𝗗𝘂𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗠𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗮 Itai Dzamara, who mysteriously disappeared yesterday in 2015, was not a politician seeking high office, a Mohamed Bouazizi into self-immolation nor a soldier commanding an army; he was an ordinary journalist-cum-activist, a husband, a father, and a citizen who believed a better Zimbabwe was possible through peaceful action. Dzamara was a great guy who liked political and social debates; an active citizen who wanted to make a change not just for himself but for the common good. We would chat at work and even during weekends at my home in Chadcombe where he used to visit, sometimes with his then small kids Nenyasha and Nokutenda. We were good friends, although we were different characters. A passionate sports fan, Dzamara loved football so much, particularly his teams Caps United and Manchester United, and that even brought us closer together. No wonder one of his best friends who used to visit him at our Zimbabwe Independent newsroom was former AmaZulu, Caps United and national team coach Charles Mhaluri. They were close. He had some influence on him. One day after Mhlauri had just been appointed Zimbabwe national football team coach in September 2004, he visited Dzamara at the Independent newsroom at N0.1 Union Avenue, Harare; just opposite to the Zanu PF headquarters, across Rotten Row, to get his opinion on who should be his assistant. I gatecrashed the meeting at the corner of the newsroom to join a good chat. For i also love football, although i support Highlanders, Orlando Pirates and Real Madrid, different teams from Dzamara's even if he had some sympathy for Los Blancos. Mhlauri wanted the late Willard Khumalo to be his assistant on football grounds, but was reluctant to make the call because he wanted media support, hence his tactical manoeuvre was to bring in Moses Chunga, a Dynamos club legend who was popular with Harare journalists, particularly those at The Herald. The debate was who would bring more into the coaching and technical team, Chunga or Khumalo, a legendary figure at Highlanders during his heyday. I was not talking, mostly listening. Chunga and Khumalo, whom I used to drink with at Oasis Hotel from time to time, were probably the most famous figures at Dynamos and Highlanders after Independence in 1980. They were also very popular at Emthonjeni (drinking hole), as we used to call Oasis bar then with its major patrons fronted by the late Chemist Siziba, one of the cellular telephony pioneers in Zimbabwe. The bar will never be the same without him. In fact, it virtually died with him. Mhlauri and Dzamara were in agreement that although Chunga was more talented than Khumalo during their playing days, the difference was that the later had more experience in the acclaimed Dream Team, widely considered Zimbabwe's best national team ever, and team leadership skills as Highlanders captain for a long time. Chunga did not play much for the Dream Team due to his issues with Reinhard Fabisch and injury. He captained Zimbabwe on a few occasions, but not Dynamos. Chunga wore the captain's armband at Eendracht Aalst in Belgium. He had also coached Dynamos in early 2000s and that counted in his favour. But there was also the issue of personality, work ethic and teamwork, which Mhlauri and Dzamara concluded favoured Khumalo. So it was agreed Khumalo would be the assistant to Mhlauri. Deal done. However, to Dzamara’s shock Chunga was announced the following day as the assistant coach. Dzamara lost it. He called his friend and protested strongly, accusing him of pandering to the whims of The Herald and Robson Sharuko & Company at the paper’s sports desk. I had concluded Mhlauri would take Chunga for strategic reasons. At that time, we did not have a good relationship with Herald guys due to political polarisation and toxic debates like which was a better league, the Zimbabwean one or South African one.

Yes, partially. On March 6, South Korea's Unification Ministry proposed a "peace declaration" to formally end the Korean War (beyond the 1953 armistice), start peace treaty talks, and promote "peaceful coexistence" with North Korea. This aligns with President Lee Jae-myung's 2026 policy goals announced late last year. Separately, the US and South Korea are discussing redeploying some Patriot systems (and prior munitions) from the peninsula to the Middle East amid the Iran conflict—not a full pullout, and not solely for Israel. US officials reaffirmed strong defense commitments to South Korea. The moves coincide in timing but aren't causally linked in reports.

JUST IN: South 🇰🇷 vs North Korea 🇰🇵 After 75 years, South Korea 🇰🇷 is considering making moves to put an end to the Korean War 🤔 They are proposing a treaty that would allow "peaceful coexistence" with North Korea. 🇰🇵 Mind you, This move came after the US pulled its weapon systems from the region to focus on protecting Israel 🇮🇱 😂😂😂 is sending me into a giggling fit.😭😭😭
