“Up to 20 percent of all New York City subway station entrances — more than 400 in total — could be affected by an extreme rain scenario, also known as a “once-a-century” flood event, according to Regional Plan Association (RPA) analysis.” rpa.org/latest/lab/flo…

Cities charge residents for water, which is something you need to live. Nobody cries foul at $50 to $200 per month for city water. But when a city charges for parking on city streets, even $30 per year, car owners get violently angry and cry loudly.

Building dense housing near transit systems could boost affordable housing, reduce emissions and promote walkability—so why isn't it happening? Expert @yfreemark discusses the challenges of balancing land use and transit capacity. ✍️ @danvock buff.ly/3Vno1Em

Even in the most transit rich metro in the country @RegionalPlan found: commuter stations are surrounded by 74,000 acres of underutilized land, 67 stations that would otherwise be ripe for TOD are constrained by zoning, and compared to NJ, suburbs in NY are not facilitating TOD

@willthomas_usa @chpcny Does the report acknowledge that the 1920 law was georgist in nature? I skimmed through it but couldn’t find reference to “land value”

This 1960 report from @chpcny on Al Smith’s georgist tax exemption law is esp interesting given that civic society seems to have recognized the supply encouraged effectively solved NYC’s post-WW1 housing shortage, but then also supported the 1961 zoning code the following year
Alyssa Katz@alykatzz

An important historical insight from @chpcny on a force that drove the 1920s building boom that houses much of NYC. Difference now is that city leaders are utterly dependent on property tax revenue to fund extensive programs, including housing + shelter. chpcny.org/how-tax-incent…

@SamEshaghoff A lot of that land is already highly regulated to protect the water supplies and reservoirs that feed NYC

Proposal to solve the affordable housing crisis in NYC: What if NYS decided to build a brand new city from scratch in this area (figure 1 million new homes), designed to be affordable, with high speed rail into NYC?

Forever thinking about that Sopranos episode where an exasperated Italian immigrant discovers that New Jersey zoning won't let him turn his garage into an ADU.

It was a real pleasure contributing to this excellent work. Hat tip to @BKBPReynoso for prioritizing & championing smart & thoughtful planning and to the rest of his team for getting this plan to the finish line. The hard work of implementation now begins!

NYC is under Flood Watch for New York City beginning at 2 AM Friday - 6 AM Saturday. Citywide average rainfall amounts of 2” - 4” are forecast, with locally higher amounts in excess of 5” possible. Continued heavy rainfall may cause numerous flash floods. (1/2)

When I pass by dedicated parking lots for apartment buildings here in Brooklyn, they appear to be very filled, especially on weekends. If that's really the case, all of those cars will have to find street parking, which is already over capacity - LOL, try finding a parking space near your home in most areas of the 5 boros - imagine that turning into "totally impossible" instead of "nearly impossible". In addition, converting some office buildings into residential would be a bit challenging especially with the plumbing expansion needed on every floor. Just think about what's already existing in office buildings - one or two bathrooms on each floor serving a plethora of offices? Now imagine that times the amount of apartments constructed on each floor. Moving on, electrical demands in addition to other residential building essentials could make that very costly, leading to the rent for these units being unaffordable for many. (or most).

@LJLaValle @NYCMayorsOffice @NYCMayor The proposed rules would only affect future development. Tenants of such hypothetical development are more likely to second guess getting a new car if they don't have dedicated parking.
