I’d been waiting for the release of “Project UFO”, and finally binge-watched all 4 episodes. Set in the 1980s, during the East-West Cold War. Back when Poland was still under a one-party Communist regime, in the era of the People’s Republic. Amidst a politically unstable time, with strikes and demonstrations raging across the country, UFO sightings begin to emerge. A researcher chasing after the UFOs, a scientist who’s been kicked off a paranormal TV show, and behind the scenes, those who seek to exploit the UFO phenomenon to manipulate public unrest. The hairstyles, fashion, cars, buses, police vehicles, analog gear, cameras, interiors, electronic music, and TV shows — all the details of the era add a distinct flavor to the story. Rather than unfolding as classic sci-fi, the series plays out as a dark human drama, satirizing society and politics. Even the old-school sci-fi font used in the title feels nostalgic.
