How will the flower bloom in 2100? We collaborated with artist Annelie Berner to create a generative web tool that visualizes how the Circaea Alpina flower might evolve in response to future climate conditions. I've finally put together a v1 of full case study including info about data, algorithms, behind the scenes and whole look dev process. Video content to follow! #variablenature

As we are working with @dmnsgn on transitioning #PEX to WebGPU I'm documenting our last big project made with WebGL. So much good stuff here i'll need to split it into several case studies.,,

@rsms Very nice. What kind of renderer is it? I mean what level of abstraction does it operate on? A gpu wrapper or some proper scene/render graph? No WebAssembly.promising() in Safari TP means it won't run there for a while or is this something that can be polyfilled somehow?

If you have a EDR/HDR display, try this little mesh gradient Playbit demo on desktop in Chrome playbit.app/demo/ (only works in chrome and safari dev preview since we use async wasm) Built with our new wide-gamut webgpu renderer, shipping in a few weeks

Many times and with envy. I think my mistake in the past was trying (and failing) to fit it within our nodes format. Maybe a new graph view/layout is needed or I should stick to code for a bit as a centralised place for state chaos. Do you have any success stories where state charts made big difference?

We tried. Really hard. And yet another app ended up like this graph. Big, interconnected - Edge cases in nodes/edges - Edge cases in code - Edge cases in data - "One more... last thing, I promise" additions - User facing foot gun prevention - 8K rendering performance singularities - "I have 64GB of RAM so i'm ok" mitigations I think we need to invent new graph/canvas primitives for change management: - versions as subgraphs - features as plugins / modules - node inheritance?

It's not that different from normal code. What was known in advance is well separated, organised and easy to maintain. What was added fast, last in project and late at night is spaghetti. When you get feedback like "move renders 1,4 and 17 20% to the right and 15 should be more red" you inevitably going to a) do it quick but adding one more if/else b) spend 2 days updating your presets spec, render output resizing code animation code. My dream holiday chill project would be to rewrite it from scratch from zero, knowing everything i know now and strive for 1:1 output match.

@marcinignac Or fix code so people stop thinking they want graphs. There's so much that needs fixing with node UIs that I wonder if it's even a tractable problem.

@bennyschudel Zoom in doesn't help. It only exposes the dependencies. It needs some complexity reduction on architectural level. But there is never time for that. Project ships and you move on.

@rudavko That not that bad idea. I could show recently updated parts of the graph going forward.

@geoffreylitt Yes. I asked Some PM questions about my Project table. It might be that initial chat involves some context building and things will improve with longer chat. I really want it to work!

@marcinignac I often use it while walking around / in random moments like waiting in lines Is it feeling really slow to you? Curious what kinds of queries and what model. If you hit 👎 on an example chat that would be much appreciated

I wonder how real world apps made with agents will handle apps that are long in development? Will they one shot extensible architecture from day one? Run monthly refactor while you sleep? Use their 1M context to see all edge cases at once and do not worry about adding one more feature?

@annaluciacodes This animation has a weird property perfectly synchronising to whatever music i'm listening at the moment. Must have hit 145 BPM frequency.

@annaluciacodes The grid size here is just perfect. More that I would feel like color by hand, less than usual computer generated "we can just do a lot". Nice.

Will Novak Djokovic's flower bloom again at Wimbledon this year? In 2019 when he won the tennis championships agains Federer we visualised the game live using IBM data as a blooming flower: sets, games, points all reflected as they happened.

@meodai @mattdesl I like that every color is valid but how do you ever get to the juiciness level of oklch? nuteLch feels very conservative in it's range (in video above and after 5 minutes of playing on the website).

Made a tiny color lib: nutelch 🌰 It sits between OKLCh and OkHSL. You dial chroma as a fraction of the way to the gamut cusp (so "saturation" means the same thing at every L & H, never out of gamut), but the result is still a plain oklch() color. Inspired by @mattdesl's work
