Whenever I am Paris, I experience its unique spirit, lovely and sweet. It’s still there in some moments, but the atmosphere has changed so much in the last decade. Something is wilting and withering, bit by bit

You were railing against “midwits” not long ago. But Paris’s core problem isn’t midwits – it’s being overrun by low-IQ populations from sub-Saharan Africa and the Arab world. That demographic reality drives the no-go zones, skyrocketing crime, welfare strain, and cultural collapse far more than any shortage of high-IQ individuals...

Mythological Beast is a 1983 short story by Stephen R. Donaldson, which I read as a kid forty years ago. In just 25 pages, it predicted or anticipated a huge number of things happening today or looking imminent tomorrow: - Apple Watch Health app - state surveillance via said app - human skills decline from AI - humanity's complete dependence on AI - Neuralese back-channel for AI-to-AI (with a twist!) - humans going off-gradient - burning data centers ...and much, much more. It's like a window into this year. I won't spoil it, but I now count it among the top ten most impactful short stories I've ever read. Strangely, it's not sci-fi, it's fantasy. And it's funny, smart, charming, amazing -- everything you'd want in a 25-page story. It's also a metaphor for the current investment landscape. Sci-fi used to be our roadmap for the future, but we've seen all of it falling to AI and space exploration. There's very little sci-fi left that won't happen in our lifetimes. Fantasy was just as big in the 60s, 70s and 80s, but it was considered crazy talk. But Fantasy is a shotgun of ideas without constraint: What humans really wish for if anything were possible. I'm calling it now: Fantasy, the genre in the broadest sense (westerns, space opera, all of it), is where we will start getting our next crop of predictions for the future. Go read Mythological Beast, you'll have a blast. And in the same collection, "Unworthy of the Angel" is the story of exactly one LLM session.

@MsSavageAF Ok maybe a super stupid question, and forgive me if I’m asking a really dumb one, but if it’s that competitive, could you relocate to a different area? Work-wise you’re good to live nearly anywhere as long as they have decent bandwidth yeah?

Try renting: 11 applications on one house in 3 days. Try buying: house taking highest and best by Tuesday. Multiple buyers with all cash offers put in, under contract by Sunday. Like how the fuck am I supposed to compete? I can’t do all cash, and rent is already so high that I can’t go higher 🤦‍♀️

This VR dev just got his Steam Frame headset and shared a few thoughts on how comfortable it is to wear.

the internet's biggest mistake was choosing 32 bits for ipv4 if they chose 8 bits instead, then the world would only have around 250 computers which would be much better for everyone involved

Everybody is asking me how to get #GaussianSplatting in #VR. This is my answer 👇 You might not like it, but the truth is that right now Unity is not ready and it doesn't matter how hard you try as soon as you go above 400K, the framerate on standalone headsets is terrible. You should instead look at the amazing work that teams at @theworldlabs and @playcanvas are doing. They are pushing innovation and are building stunning tech demos where features like the LOD turns into gameplay mechanic. Using your hands as a sort of torch to define the LOD is genius! This is the best moment to experiment and show innovation. For a second, take a step back from your training and simulations, train an AI on how to build on Playcanvas or Spark and break things.

@OneMoreBenjamin Who would spend around a thousand US dollars on the Frame just to play these low-quality ports from Quest?

@OneMoreBenjamin In many cases not even really a port - @openbrushapp ran first time on the Frame with no modification. There's some non-core stuff that needs to change but 90% of the app just worked.

@andybak You can’t use the DSP on the Meta Quest because it’s completely locked down, you can’t use Bluetooth on Meta Quest in store apps because it’s locked down, and the 3rd party tracked controllers. All three possible on Vision Pro! Sideloading also works, so that’s not a point.

@NimaZeighami @josethevrtech Yeah but isn't there's a way of doing that without claiming that one of the least open companies is the most open? I mean obviously excluding Sony and Nintendo...
