We need to start viewing the role of social media manager as something more akin to that of a creative director. They should be overseeing a team and guiding the creation of content--not doing it all by themselves.

Here's my philosophy on brands using memes (legal issues aside): It doesn't work if you force it, do it out of FOMO, or is just self-serving. It has to fit your brand perfectly or it's just "meh" at best, cringe at worst. It needs to work so well, that you can't not post it.

Whenever a new meme or trend comes along, I always think about this Tweet before jumping on it from a brand account.

I was in my early 20s when I realized my parents didn’t know what was best for me. I moved to NYC for grad school and they begged me to stay and go to somewhere closer. I followed my own calling, anyway. I knew they loved me, but their perspective and not something I would apply to my own life. As a psychologist, I treated lots of people who lived for their parent’s approval and depression, anxiety, and resentment were always the end result.
