Excellent meeting with @SecRubio in Washington DC. The United States is a key ally and partner for Finland. We discussed transatlantic security, Russia’s war against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.

Together with Minister for Foreign Affairs @elinavaltonen we had an excellent call with @ZelenskyyUa. We discussed the situation on the battle field, president Zelenskyi’s recent trip to the Gulf region and how to continue supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities.

Forward Land Forces Finland is an important part of NATO’s deterrence and defence on the Northern Flank. Yesterday, the Swedish government submitted a bill proposing that Sweden contribute to NATO’s forward presence in Finland. By strengthening NATO presence in Northern Europe, we increase deterrence against Russia and strengthen the ability to operate in an increasingly important Arctic.

I welcome the ceasefire agreed between Iran and the US last night. We continue to support all the efforts to end the war and to build this ceasefire into a more permanent arrangement in the Strait of Hormuz and in the whole Middle East.

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th. I am often asked why we do well in these rankings. I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice. The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature. There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

Among allies, issues are best resolved through discussion, not through pressure. Strengthening Arctic security together with allies is very important for Finland. This is also the purpose of the Danish-led and allied-coordinated action in Greenland. European countries stand united. We emphasize the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty. We support Denmark and Greenland. Dialogue with the United States continues. Tariffs would undermine the transatlantic relationship and risk a dangerous downward spiral.

We had a discussion this evening with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and other Nordic prime ministers. Only Denmark and Greenland can decide on matters that concern them.
