No Emperor, indeed no man save for Alexander, had won such a victory against the Persians. Sadly, the peace so hard fought for was short-lived, and again he was forced, this time in old age, to face yet another threat to the Roman World.

After raiding Persian territory while chasing Khusrow, Heraclius decided to winter in Caucasian Albania. However, Khusrow sent three armies led by commanded by Shahrbaraz, Shahin, and Shahraplakan to trap Heraclius and bring an end to his invasion.

Nick is right on the money, DE is the best place for startups based on my 40 years of working with startups in SV. I saw the shift from CA to DE about 2009. Ironically the VCs reinforced this shift by requiring non DE incorporated startups to reincorporate in DE. The Tesla decision, agree or disagree with the conclusion, is unlikely to affect startups. PS I worked with Nick and he is very insightful as demonstrated by this post.

Founders and VCs are off the mark on implications here for startups choosing a state to incorporate. Legal costs and uncertainty will be materially increased for no benefit by choosing to forego DE for formation in 99.99% of startup scenarios. This issue is irrelevant to early stage startups, because it only relates to public company compensation committees independence and shareholder vote thresholds. You can worry about re-domesticating to NV/WY once you’re growth stage and prepping for an IPO if you’re that concerned around your exec comp lawyers not properly advising on potential conflicts to independence and necessity for a higher threshold if determined (which is the real issue here at the root). Focus on what matters. You have enough on your plate as a founder.

A Delaware Judge just blocked Elon’s ~$56B Tesla pay package And simultaneously awarded $345m in compensation to the LAWYERS who sued to block the original pay package I recommend all future companies to incorporate outside of Delaware

Guns and Romans: A brief history of Roman firearms Such a history must be brief because the history of European firearms only begins in the 14th century and the Roman Empire wasn’t destined to be around much longer. Yet firearms were far from unknown in the Byzantine world!

By the late 1930s, the British Government is engaged in a massive rearmament program. Britain enters WW2 much better prepared than commonly thought. This program was opposed in whole or in part by the British Labour party, very weirdly, given it was notionally anti Nazi.

Even Winston Churchill's worst critic would concede he was an exceptionally brave man. My favourite Churchill story is that he, after the Gallipoli disaster (the Dardenelles plan did have merit) went to fight in France in 1916 with the Royal Scots Fusiliers as a form of penance.

33 Thomas now sits (largely) empty, made obsolete by evolving technology. For a time, the NSA used it as its NYC-based spy hub, which was revealed by The Intercept in 2016. But it still leads New Yorkers and tourists alike to ask "What IS that thing?"

Early Christian Rome – Besides Roman heritage, Rome is well-known for its many churches, however, most people only visit some baroque churches and miss out on many early Christian treasures that can be found in the city. Thread of early Christian remains in Rome (4th-5th century)

In this poignant speech, Alexander the Great not only defended his decisions and actions but also sought to rekindle the loyalty and camaraderie that had forged the Hellenic empire. By reminding his soldiers of their collective journey from humble beginnings to unparalleled conquests, Alexander underscored the importance of unity and mutual respect. His words served as a powerful reminder of the shared sacrifices and triumphs that had brought them to this moment, urging them to continue their legacy together. This speech at Opis remains a testament to Alexander's leadership and his enduring bond with his men.

Alexander’s Speech Everybody knows Alexander the Great; he almost single-handedly united ancient Hellas and brought its civilization to new frontiers, creating the Hellenistic Era. What many do not know, is his complicated relationship with his troops. As I said, he wasn’t alone in his adventure; he had an army of inglourious basterds, with most of them Greek to the bone. Naturally, and as the Hellenic spirit commands, they all had opinions and were also incredibly unruly; they were beasts on the battlefield but divas outside of it. Alexander had a very complex relationship with them; they were a dysfunctional family and had mutinied more than once. What many also do not know, is that Alexander was also a brilliant orator and always managed to handle their attitudes; I am bringing you today his speech, as documented in detail by Arrian, when he addressed his mutinous troops in Opis. They demanded to go back and were offended that he was embracing the conquered Persians, rather than “staying true" to the Greek customs. Follow me down this thread, as I am relaying his exact words, in his language, translating it also in English. You will be able to read exactly what he said, while he yelled emotionally at his troops. Here's the speech in Ancient & Modern Greek and English:

Very well deserved. I have read many essays and books about Justinian starting with my first course in Byzantine history at U. of Michigan in 1972. @peter_sarris work is the most comprehensive and balanced history that I have read. And it is elegantly written. Congrats!

Totally bowled over that ‘Justinian’ has won the London Hellenic Prize against stiff competition from over 150 wonderful entrants! It is a huge honour to be reckoned alongside such past winners as @19Averil , Mark Mazower, Peter Parsons et al. Amazing news!

Unfinished Production (НЗП) is a budgetary category of construction projects in the MoD that were not completed for whatever reason. The incomplete construction projects are handed off from the original contractor to someone else, so the total cost to complete is higher.
