@MouseBishop @Grizzlegutweed1 There’s an account quoted in Peter Burley’s book, I think. John refers to bodies in the streets, so I guess he was walking around in the aftermath. It’d be hard to see from the abbey tower but perhaps easier from the Waxhouse gate?

Have you ever thought the Abbey Gateway in St Albans looks a bit like a castle? Well, that’s because it was one… King Edward III gave the abbot permission to fortify the abbey in 1357, with the crenellated gateway following just a few years later.
