We're conducting a study on how lactate measurements are used to monitor endurance training intensity. If you're an athlete or coach who uses lactate testing in your sessions, we’d love your input! 🧪🏃‍♂️ Link: forms.office.com/e/uM1jJ0zRGc Sharing is appreciated!! @GIRD_UCLM

@jem_arnold @OyvindSandbakk Ultimately task specificity determines “optimal” training in real world. questions about task demands, with interventions designed to challenge thoughts on development of same are imo way forward

A giant of a man taken far too soon. Our beloved colleague and friend, Dave Fagan, has passed away after a short illness. Rest easy Dave. All our thoughts are with Pam, Shauna, Ciarán, Eoin and all his family. 🔗 | bit.ly/4gm1Sxz #RIP

So chosen clubs get up to 3 teams in divisions at higher standard than smaller clubs teams. Without explanation, and for €30 reg per player. 28 divisions U10 x 12 teams per division x 12 players per team = ~€120,000. And no explanation. How does this work?

@DDSL_Official @FAIreland multiple requests for clarity on underage league formation committee personnel, process and decision making, no response. Using U10 boys as example-48 places in top 2 divisions Sat and Sunday-15 places go to 7 clubs. There are 132 clubs in the DDSL (1/2)

@stevemagness Organised around the specific target, with credence given to recovery time needed at specific intensities. Despite the fact that I’ve spent time going through distributions I think this just further goes to specificity of target, against background of understanding physiology

We hear a lot about the training distribution of endurance athletes. Here's how one elite actually trains, a 2:03 marathoner. This is an analysis of 3 months of data, based on % of total miles at each pace. What do you see? There are NO grey area training zones...

My favourite Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh quotes: "Seán Óg Ó hAilpín. His father's from Fermanagh. His mother's from Fiji. Neither a hurling stronghold." "The stopwatch has stopped. It’s up to God and the referee now. The referee is Pat Horan. God is God." "Teddy McCarthy to John McCarthy, no relation. John McCarthy to Teddy McCarthy, still no relation." "Anthony Lynch, the Cork corner-back, will be the last person to let you down. His people are undertakers." "1.5 to 0.8 - well, from Lapland to the Antarctic, that’s level scores in any man’s language." "I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them. The priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey. 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field, Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, and it’s a goal. So much for religion!" "Pat Fox out to the 40 and grabs the sliotar. I bought a dog from his father last week. Fox turns and sprints for goal. The dog ran a great race last Tuesday in Limerick. Fox to the 21, fires a shot, it goes to the left and wide. And the dog lost as well." "He grabs the sliothar. He's on the 50. He's on the 40. He's on the 30. He's on the ground." "Colin Corkery on the 45 lets it go with the right boot. It's over the bar. This man shouldn’t be playing football. He’s made an almost Lazarus-like recovery from a heart condition. Lazarus was a great man, but he couldn’t kick points like Colin Corkery." "Pat Fox has it on his hurl and is motoring well now, but here comes Joe Rabbitte hot on his tail. I’ve seen it all now, a Rabbitte chasing a Fox around Croke Park." "He’s not a big man, he’s not a small man, he’s what you might call a handyman." "Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, I’ll tell you a little story. I was in Times Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a newsstand, and I said, 'I suppose ye wouldn’t have The Kerryman, would ya?' To which, the Egyptian behind the counter turned to me, and he said, 'Do you want the North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?' He had both so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet."

So as promised. Thread no. 1. on the dreaded LT1. I will try and keep these pretty brief, address some common misconceptions and give some practical points (I hope) So, LT1, or Lactate Threshold 1. Sometimes called the Aerobic Threshold (although I think that is a bad name) 1/
Tom Hughes 💙@DrTEHughes

You don't need to train ⬇️ LT1 to ⬆️ pwr/speed at LT1 You don't need to train at/⬇️ FTP to ⬆️ FTP You don't need to train at VO2max to ⬆️ VO2max You don't need to train at FatMax to ⬆️ FatMax Aerobic capacity/fitness is a multitude of variables. There are many ways to improve it
