Michael Rousseau’s lack of judgement this week overshadowed much better news about institutional bilingualism in Canada. The judges of Supreme Court of Canada heard for 4 days arguments on bill 21 (secularism) without using simultaneous translation. All pitching in with questions from the bench in french and english, regardless of their native or professional training language. We have 9 exceptional jurist in the highest court of the land who can hear appeals and understand pleadings in front of them in both official languages, not a translation of it, but the actual language with its nuance.

The World's Dumbest Tariff Has Been Revealed “Trump’s 50% tariff and removal of an exemption for Canada drove producers there to send US-bound shipments to Europe instead. In just a few months, Aluminerie Alouette – North America's largest smelter – saw its European sales rise from 4% of production to 57%. Rio Tinto Plc largely stopped shipping Canadian aluminum to the US, and even Alcoa diverted around 100,000 metric tons to non-US destinations.” bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

Think I’m full of it vis a vis the essential nature of French Canada in preserving Canadian distinctness from the United States? Listen to George Grant.

"The pilots sacrificed themselves to save everybody." Captain Steeeve says the "heroic" Air Canada pilots involved in the LaGuardia plane crash "could have veered left or right to avoid harm for them in the cockpit.” 📺youtu.be/F82jBioz6GA @piersmorgan

My take that pisses everyone off: It is impossible to be a Canadian nationalist while denigrating the significance or relevance of the French language. The single greatest differentiator between Canada and the United States is the existence of Québec.

Carney made an effort and showed improvement. Carney showed respect for the language. That’s what counts to Francophones. It probably counts more than having grown up fluently bilingual.
Tristin Hopper@TristinHopper

The fact that Mark Carney won Quebec despite basically not speaking French, to me, suggests that the whole thing largely functions as a power grab like all the other DEI. It's important until it isn't.

@CoryBMorgan You know that they don't. While I'm not a fan of performative votes (like many of the CPC's opposition day motions), you know exactly what this is. What is much more interesting is to look at how many shares the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec has in Air Canada.

@youknowimcoco @TLNewmanMTL Honestly, you'll only find full bilingualism in New Brunswick, which is the only officially bilingual province. You'll find very high levels of bilingualism in Quebec, since learning English is almost a global necessity. In Ontario and the Maritime provinces, it'll be mixed.

@markpa84 @TLNewmanMTL To be honest, we (the other 8 billion people on the planet) always thought that - east of Calgary and Edmonton, at least - Canada is fully bilingual.🥹 Hence the Simpsons jokes.🤷🏻‍♂️ So Justin Bieber, from London(ON), doesn't speak French!?😱

Everyday, on the metro in Montreal, travellers only hear warning messages in French. No one suggests it's a moral failing. No one seems concerned about the safety of those visiting from other provinces or from countries who think Canada is bilingual.

@CavalryCanuck @CoopTory It is a founding language of Canada. While I don't have solid data on this, I'd imagine that in most countries, people learn the official languages. They may not become fluent (and nobody is asking for everyone to be fluent in French in Canada), but they at least know the basics.

I won’t argue against it being a strength. It most certainly is. However, when learning French is mandated rather than an option, and without public use aside from government-mandated instances, it becomes a symbol of authority over us rather than a symbol of commonality between us.

@Prominent_Bryan Also, after four years of lessons, he should be capable of saying a couple of sentences in French in a recorded message. Nobody is asking him to be perfectly fluent.

I'm confused. I know it's silly for politicians to get involved but didn't the CEO of Air Canada commit to learning French for years? No matter what you think about bilingualism in this country, we shouldn't tolerate people who lie to get a job (the CEO here, the general governor, Flaherty under Harper etc) If you commit to learning French, do it

I await Governor General Mary Simon's condolence video in French. Why do the Liberals hold the CEO of Air Canada to a higher standard of bilingualism than their own appointee as Governor General, who hasn't learned French after four years in the role? TBH, I would rather have the CEO of our flagship carrier focusing his scarce time on safety and reliability than language training.
Tristin Hopper@TristinHopper

Air Canada has gone 43 (!) years without a fatal incident. My entire life up to this point has been lived in a country where the flag carrier never got a single person killed in a crash. The record is a totem to what serious people can accomplish. So naturally, Mark Carney is screaming at them to instead focus on nonsense.
