Len Deighton, one of the greatest espionage writers of our time, has passed away at age 97. The Royal Air Force veteran and illustrator once served coffee to Agatha Christie on a flight to Beirut while working as a flight attendant before the publication of what is still probably his most well-known novel, THE IPCRESS FILE, in 1962, a book that introduced an unnamed working-class protagonist, a man who would become Harry Palmer in the Michael Caine films. He would go on to write over thirty books spanning the decades. On the cusp of his rise to the pinnacle of literary prominence, he lunched with Ian Fleming at the White Tower restaurant in London, a meal Deighton notes in “James Bond: My Long and Eventful Search for His Father.” He also lent his extraordinary talents to screenwriting, became the travel editor for Playboy magazine, wrote “cookstrips” and cookbooks, produced films, and penned multiple works of non-fiction. In the 1980s he created Bernard Samson, a character who would thrill readers through three trilogies into the 90s. I came across an interesting story on the @spywrite website by Jeff Quest detailing a surprise 75th birthday lunch for author Eric Ambler on June 29, 1984 at the Savoy Hotel in London. Len Deighton had organized it in Ambler’s honor. In attendance were John le Carré, Frederick Forsyth, John Gardner, Anthony Price, Kingsley Amis, Gavin Lyall, Ted Allbeury, Lionel Davidson, Miles Tripp, Julian Symons, and H.R.F. Keating. The group photo above was given to author Mike Ripley by Anthony Price’s family and published in Ripley’s article for Shots Magazine. No one knows the exact details of what was discussed or what libations flowed, but what a lunch that must have been! Le Carré, Forsyth and Deighton paid the bill. I understand that a menu from the lunch survived…and it was signed by all in attendance. An inspiration and a true master of the craft…Deighton’s legacy remains. He will be missed. All of today’s thriller writers and writers of espionage have been influenced by Len Deighton, whether they know it or not. Len Deighton February 18, 1929 - March 15, 2026

This is how a child responds to a political argument, and frankly, it’s insulting given what my family and I have gone through under this regime. But that’s not surprising, given how many of my compatriots don’t engage in civic life —particularly political life — when they’re living outside of Iran. It’s why I was one of the few Iranians — and often the only Iranian — in the room when I was working in politics. It’s why there’s only one Iranian Democrat in all of Congress. Los Angeles has never had a serious Iranian candidate for mayor!

He might get annoyed I'm sharing this, but Bobby Hurley was one of the first people to reach out to me when my cousin Sarah died in a car accident a few years ago. A couple weeks later - after a close loss to Arizona - he was walking with his family & saw me in the tunnel at DFA. He halted his group and asked how my family was doing. He probably wanted to get home and decompress, but he let me dictate how long that conversation was going to be. If I needed someone to listen in that moment, he was going to do that for me.

According to an exclusive report by Axios Ukrainian officials offered the Trump administration a plan to establish world-wide operating anti-drone network, which would not only operate in Europe but also in the Middle East and even east Asia. The exchange, which occurred in August 2025, contained slides describing the concept and provided maps. This defense network, which would have been made up by 20 million drones, a multi-layer capability and assert „American drone dominance“, would have been capable to counter even the Shahed waves, which are harassing the Middle East right now. The slides even explicitly contained warnings that Iranian regime is improving its drone capabilities. It all has been dismissed by the Trump administration back in August 2025, which - incidentally - was also the exact time Putin was invited to Alaska. The US and many countries in the Middle East countries are now rushing to implement a defense network, with Ukrainian help.

@OzKaterji I have close family in Israel and good friends in Dubai and among the Iranian diaspora in LA. I try to just listen and support and appreciate the nuance with which you have covered the conflict.

Lots of westerners with no family in the Middle East yelling at people who have suffered immensely at the hands of this regime for decades. This war is clearly immensely unpopular across the board, but here in the Middle East it’s largely seen as a war between oppressors.

There are only 4 possible scenarios. 4th is the best option for humanity & the one Trump would rather die than accept. 1. Trump admits defeat & leaves Iran. Global power shifts clearly to China and Russia 2. Trump conducts a ground invasion. USA will lose. Potentially millions killed. Likely global war erupts. 3. Israel & USA use nuclear weapons. Definite global war erupts. Potentially billions killed. 4. Trump resigns or is impeached and actual peace negotiations begin. Praying for Option 4.
