I need to talk about Sen̓áḵw. This word has been in the news for years, and I still hear it mispronounced constantly—by journalists, politicians, and well-meaning people who just haven't been shown how. It's a word from the Squamish Language. Let me walk you through it. 🧵

For those pondering the logic of Smith's question, try this simpler version: Would you like to stay inside or would you like to go outside? If the possible answers are YES or NO then logic says answer YES if you want to do either one of the options and NO if you want neither.

A ludicrous, contradictory referendum question mars the best pro-Canada speech Smith has given so far. Column. calgaryherald.com/opinion/column… #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli #yyc #yeg #canpoli

@acoyne @gmacofglebe In related news, when Danielle Smith says she is consulting with Quebec on the judge's ruling, denying her petition for a referendum on separation, this is the guy to whom she is referring. thetyee.ca/News/2025/10/0…

This is a disappointing piece, based as it is on that old Twitter-argument standby, the imputed double standard — which isn’t a double standard. I’ve never said or implied that it’s okay for Quebec to deploy the “knife at the throat” but not for Alberta. I’ve spent my whole career attacking its use by Quebec nationalists; Alberta’s separatists and their fellow travellers are only the latest to try it. And I stand by the point I made on the panel: no federation, no country, can operate on the basis that if we get our way on any given issue we stay, but if we don’t we’re gone. You can’t run a book club on that basis. No country could, and no country, other than Canada, does. There’s a reason Canada has, uniquely among the major democracies, spent the last 60 years perched on the verge of dissolution. It’s the same reason we’re now headed for not one but two referendums on secession, even as the president of the United States threatens to devour the pieces. It’s because, all but uniquely, we have tolerated the idea that secession is a legitimate “option,” and that the only response open to the rest of Canada is to make regular ransom payments to forestall it. To allow for the possibility is to invite it.
