@markwalt If Luddites are what you have in mind when you say that the term is new but the practice is old, you'll get no argument from me. It sounds like you disagree with people who say that there is no such thing as cancel culture since obviously this has been going on for centuries.

There seems to have been a consensus that "cancel culture" doesn't exist, but now people are being harassed & fired for opposing Israel, and that does exist. So do we need a term for this "new" phenomenon ("quashing culture"?), or is it that "cancel culture" has started to exist?

@JonathanMTweet I would say that the sabotage performed by the Luddites would be an example. Not exactly the same as a modern boycott, but in older days boycotts and strikes were more likely to be illegal, and so, anonymity was desirable.

On LGR today is the first (and only) digital camera using Iomega Clik disks for storage! youtu.be/RpNXb-6tahQ The Agfa CL30 Clik released in 1999 and used 40MB Clik disks, which cost far less than CompactFlash!...and hardly anyone bought the thing. But dang it sure was neat.
