@citytravelmary Good question. In the same way they won't directly bomb Iranian missile and drone launchers, they don't want to get dragged into a direct war with Iran. Which is a bit of a one-way wish, as Iran is already attacking them.

@markwhiteTV Mark why have the Gulf States not protected the Gulf of Hormuz? Iran are now holding them and us to ransom? Surly all those states are more powerful than just Iran?

This is a remarkable table. It shows that to all intents and purposes the UK currently doesn’t have a navy it can deploy. It is a national scandal. But, of course, nobody — political or military — will be held accountable, much less sacked.

Think that is departmental spending, rather than GDP. By whatever measure, Defence has been completely hollowed out. Unforgivable that we have no presence in this volatile region at a time when our bases are coming under attack. HMS Dragon won’t be available to sail until early next week.

@tomhfh Actually Tom, defence is presently closer to 2.3%. Despite the pledge to go to 5.6%, that won’t be reached until well into the mid/late 2030s, and it in any case is highly misleading because it includes things like civilian infrastructure, not only military expenditure.

Defence 1938: 12.3% of spending Defence 2026: 5.6% of spending Welfare: 9.6->14.2 Pensions: 2.6->17 Health: 5.7->19.4

This is a shocking indictment on the state of the Royal Navy after decades of underfunding. And not a single warship in the Mediterranean or Persian Gulf at the moment.
