@gonglei89 GFC also coincided w steady growth in birth rates 20ish year earlier. Gen X was a relatively small birth cohort, but birthrates start to climb for early millennials, peaking in the early 90s. 18 yrs later those kids face extreme crowds and competition as they enter job markets.

Yes. Literally used to be that jobs were thrown at you walking off the graduation podium in the US. This started changing in the mid 2000s and the floor completely caved after the GFC. Why d’you think there are Gen X and early millennial humanities majors in corporate leadership?
Solus@Ersatz_Solus

Were people back in the day actually told "any college degree will work"? When I was a kid it was pretty emphasized you have to major in something useful. Like genuinely out of everything that's the most "the past is a foreign country" thing for me.

@krazgreinetz This is largely a product of demographics. Lg cities are full of millennials (a huge generation) who are getting married, having kids, buying homes, and suburbs are far more conducive for this life stage, w little to do w demand for walkability.

Yeah this is one area where Urbanist Twitter has a blind spot. People are (still) fleeing Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis etc. for Phoenix and Dallas. Like, there is very real demand for these cities and large swaths of the country that genuinely does not value walkability.

Chicago shrinking goes against all my priors

What if traffic is actually a job-concentration problem? Take Charlotte for example 1,000,000 commuters heading to a handful of job centers “Rush hour” only happens on major roads leading to those areas. Most streets are empty Spreading the jobs might solve traffic

@blaculascream It’s mainly that young people live in cities and move away when they get older. It’s not just NY but every US city.

@TheStalwart @DKThomp recommend Jarvis' The Gutenberg Parenthesis or Mark Poster's Mode of Information & Second Media Age for similar writing on the social implications of print, electronic, & digital media :)

@DKThomp @ReubenR80027912 It’s not a paper but Richard Easterlin’s Birth and Fortune makes a compelling case for the benefit of small cohort sizes within that cohort. Not exactly the same thing as pop growth but interesting framing.

@JonKrawczynski This was the exact same discourse in baseball 5 years ago, but there were obviously legit concerns w the game that led to rule changes.

@jean_twenge @ReubenR80027912 It’s likely related to the changing dating script where the decline begins post-70s. Bogle’s book Hooking Up describes how dating as an intro to physical intimacy is replaced by group socializing. For teens and young adults the date comes after, if at all.

Or “dating” is an archaic term Maybe 17 year olds don’t take their g/f to Cheesecake Factory as a date anymore but they’re doing something I think a 17 yr old hears “go on a date” & literally imagines sharing a malted in a varsity jacket behind a sign that says “Whites Only”
Jean Twenge (author of 10 RULES, GENERATIONS)@jean_twenge

Dating is definitely in crisis mode among U.S. 17- and 18-year-olds. Data from Monitoring the Future (graph is an update of Figure 6.16 in *Generations*) @DKThomp

From Thursday’s practice: Just a reminder that Giants ownership, specifically John Mara, is watching everything that goes on. He’s in the building on a daily basis. That’s not true with every organization. #Giants

@JerryKe06452906 Are you suggesting that ppl in cities have no sense of personal responsibility? Seems pretty unrealistic to me. In any case, Elizabeth’s new book (that this piece is based off of) does exactly that, w her years of interviews w rural Americans.

@marleyrandazzo You failed to identify the biggest difference between rural and urban communities. The biggest difference is the concept of personal responsibility. Don’t study stats, go and talk to the rural folks where personal initiative and responsibility are their guiding principles.
