also "it's a hate read" doing a hate read doesn't mean you should misunderstand the book? I also think it's irresponsible to post those parts without context to make the author look like a bigot.

why would you pick up yesteryear, a book about a trad wife main character, and be shocked the character has trad wife beliefs? are you an idiot?
English

@quietbooklion I just finished Yesteryear today. Hated the main character as a person but still rated the book 4.5 stars because it was such an enjoyable read overall!
English

Been seeing this with Yesteryear. The main character is not supposed to be likable, that's the whole point.

Unpopular book opinion - characters in books aren’t always written to make you, as a reader, like them. Seeing poor reviews of a book mainly because the ‘character was unlikeable’ sometimes rubs me the wrong way
English

@TheLPLoudon Agreed! I’ve read books with infuriating character types but I find it interesting and I like it when a book provokes emotion!
English

@marsieworm My hottest take is that sometimes unlikable characters are the most fun. You wouldn’t want to know them but as long as they’re safely on the page and nowhere else???
English

@marsieworm In a similar vein, just because a book contains controversial themes that seem one way doesn't mean the author endorses those themes. Some stories are meant to make you feel uncomfortable.
English

@MathterWorks Agreed! That’s why I specifically said ‘aren’t always’ - because of what you said 😊
English

@marsieworm It depends...I agree for the most part. However, some plots require the character to be "likable" to work.
English

@lovevajackss I guess I’m also being a bit hypocritical because I also believe you should rate books however you want 😆 but I feel bad when authors get a 1 star rating because of an ‘unlikeable character’!
English

@marsieworm yess exactly some characters are purposefully written to be unlikeable or at least complicated
English

@marsieworm i'm pushing 30 not there yet, in two years i will be there
English

@bookswithiris I was supposed to do a no buy month but walked into a bookstore and left with 2 new books 🙃
English

@hibunnyi I joined the club a little over 2 weeks ago! I had horrid side effects the first 9 days 🙃 but they’re okay now! I’m still waiting for the benefits to show though!
