10 years from now - it's 2027, we'll look back and say, how did the financial system not see all this coming?

RIP Charlie Kirk. Absolutely tragic. Lucky for 🇺🇸 that his central messages were nonviolence, tolerance of opposing views and the importance of engaging in civil discourse with those whom who you disagree with most profoundly. He often said “when discourse ends, violence begins.” I did not know Charlie, but watching his videos was oddly comforting to me in that they were a rare example of someone actively seeking - and engaging in - civil dialogue with “the other side.” I applaud our President for saying in an interview that nonviolence was the best way to honor him. I was also heartened by the gracious tributes to him from Bernie Sanders, Gavin Newsom, Ezra Klein and MSNBC anchor Katy Tur. I do think it is important to name and shame those who are celebrating his murder, but also important to elevate and amplify liberal voices who are acknowledging and sometimes even celebrating his best qualities. As my friend Antonio Gracias says, I hope that our compassion can be stronger than our hate. We are human and American before we are liberal or conservative.

I was recently speaking with someone about how well Singapore govt is run who implied they have it easy since it’s such a wealthy, well educated, homogenous society. A proper reading of history shows how difficult the task actually was for LKY and his govt. So important these days to show how poor, multi-cultural, low education societies can be transformed for the better by competent govt. There is hope.

How Singapore wiped out heroin use in April 1977: "When Operation Ferret was launched, I was tasked to go to Weld Road, which was then Ground Zero for heroin addicts. We saw so many that we literally went around collecting them one by one. It was that easy. They didn't bother to struggle because many were already high on drugs. And once we managed to nab a pusher, our job would be made even easier. We just sat there in his flat and waited for the addicts to come knocking one by one."

@ekrii3 You really cannot have too many degrees of freedom. Like post secondary education, it’s obvious to those in the know the more degrees you have, the more successful you’ll be.

An interesting quirk I noticed in new researchers at rentech is they'd be afraid to add features. Here's a little secret : nothing gets worse if you add another feature, you can literally just add more and more until you get a higher r^2. They don't really teach this at school.

This week, Paradigm filed a comment with the CFTC on its quick request for comment on how to list spot crypto for trading on designated contract markets. Our comment is, frankly, pretty simple: we believe any trading of spot crypto shouldn’t disadvantage DeFi.

everyone I know believes we have a few years max until the value of labor totally collapses and capital accretes to owners on a runaway loop - basically marx' worst nightmare/fantasy. this is the permanent underclass thing. and everyone I know subscribes to it

In 2015, Taylor Sheridan started his writing career with “Sicario” (then “Hell of High Water”, “Yellowstone”) In 2022, he bought 6666 Ranch in Texas for $320m. He paid for it with a 10+ show deal with Paramount, which is how we get this “Landman” dialogue:

One important distinction: Running entirely locally is more likely to preserve privileged relationships — such as attorney-client, doctor-patient, or clergy-penitent. While the legal boundaries of privilege in AI contexts are still evolving, local use typically sets a much higher bar for access. Platforms can be subpoenaed — often without judicial oversight — and it’s unclear whether they will notify or defend you. Many companies today cooperate quickly with government requests, especially when the cost of resistance is high. The current political environment also makes it more likely that platforms will cooperate. But if the information is stored only on your personal device, law enforcement usually needs a search warrant, which requires probable cause and judicial approval — a far stricter standard than a subpoena. (All of the above reflects my understanding of U.S. law, double-checked with ChatGPT. IANAL)
Sam Altman@sama

gpt-oss is a big deal; it is a state-of-the-art open-weights reasoning model, with strong real-world performance comparable to o4-mini, that you can run locally on your own computer (or phone with the smaller size). We believe this is the best and most usable open model in the world. We're excited to make this model, the result of billions of dollars of research, available to the world to get AI into the hands of the most people possible. We believe far more good than bad will come from it; for example, gpt-oss-120b performs about as well as o3 on challenging health issues. We have worked hard to mitigate the most serious safety issues, especially around biosecurity. gpt-oss models perform comparably to our frontier models on internal safety benchmarks. We believe in individual empowerment. Although we believe most people will want to use a convenient service like ChatGPT, people should be able to directly control and modify their own AI when they need to, and the privacy benefits are obvious. As part of this, we are quite hopeful that this release will enable new kinds of research and the creation of new kinds of products. We expect a meaningful uptick in the rate of innovation in our field, and for many more people to do important work than were able to before. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure AGI that benefits all of humanity. To that end, we are excited for the world to be building on an open AI stack created in the United States, based on democratic values, available for free to all and for wide benefit.

You never see old Range Rovers on the road. They're notoriously unreliable and expensive to maintain. This is a feature, not a bug. If you're in a $100,000 Lexus, we think you're wealthy, but not excessively so. If you're in a $150k on a Range Rover that is unlikely to survive 2 years, you're saying, "I'm a BALLER who's 100% OK burning money."
