REMINISCENCE: THE PRICE OF OUR DEMOCRACY Nigeria’s democracy did not come easy. It was earned through sacrifice, through incarceration, tears, blood, and, for many, the ultimate price. Recently, two powerful reminders of that era came my way. The first is a December 1989 publication by the International Union of Students (IUS), which highlighted a global campaign demanding my release, alongside that of South Korean student leader Rim Suyong. Interestingly, in the absence of a proper photograph, the publishers resorted to using an illustrative image to represent me. The second is even more personal, a handmade poster calling for the release of myself and my colleague, Gbenga Komolafe, who later joined me in detention. These artifacts speak to a defining moment in history, an era of strong international solidarity. Our generation stood at the forefront of a global pro-democracy movement that swept across Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia in the late 1980s. As we reflect on our democratic journey today, it is important to remember that the freedoms we now enjoy were hard-won. They were secured by individuals and movements that refused to be silenced, even in the face of repression. Over $27T sits locked in correspondent banking, not because institutions want idle capital, but because the system requires pre-funded trust. Funds are duplicated across jurisdictions just to make settlement possible. That’s not inefficiency at the edges. That’s inefficiency at the core. When you look at it that way, moving onchain isn’t about disruption. It’s about removing the need for capital to stand in as a substitute for coordination. As more institutions connect, the network doesn’t just grow linearly. Each new participant increases the number of possible direct settlement relationships. Fewer hops, fewer intermediaries, and less need for capital to sit idle between them. Within that system, $ZK sits at the coordination layer. $ZK is the only native asset of the ZKsync network. It functions as a governance token, where holders participate in decisions around protocol upgrades, fee structures, and network parameters through the Token Assembly, alongside the Security Council and Guardians. It also acts as the native gas token for ZKsync Gateway, which aggregates activity across ZKsync chains and Prividium environments before settling to Ethereum L1. So the shift here isn’t just about putting transactions onchain. It’s about redesigning how institutions coordinate, so capital can actually move instead of waiting to be trusted.
