Supreme Court has finally laid to rest the issue of consent requirements in garnishee proceedings. The court has held that the Central Bank is not a public officer as envisaged under section 84 of the SCPA. Also, consent of the AGF is no longer mandatory to garnishee the funds of MDAs in custody of the Central Bank. Lawyers and law students, where a university or law faculty sponsors its students for a moot competition, should the prize money go to the university/faculty if the students win? What of where the students sponsored themselves and catered for all the expenses?

After over 5 years of languishing behind bars for simply protesting against police brutality during the #EndSARS protest, we have finally secured the release of this young man who was only 17 years old when he was arrested in October 2020. In 2021, when his case was brought before the Lagos State High Court, he was charged with all sorts of criminal charges including unlawful possession of firearms with intent to commit robbery and unlawful wearing of armed forces uniform, yet not one shred of evidence was ever presented to substantiate the claims. Our legal team in Lagos only became involved in 2024, following the passing of his former lawyer, Mr. Ogunlana, Esq., when the case was referred to us by @TIBMovement. Since then, the case has suffered multiple adjournments as the prosecution failed to present a witness. Today, we applied for the case to be struck out due to a lack of diligent prosecution, and the court granted our prayer. Seeing our client walk out of the courtroom a free man today and reunite with his family after over five years of unjust detention gave us great joy. For him, and for countless others enduring Nigeria’s unjust justice system, we will continue to fight tirelessly. May justice always prevail. Cc: @_yemia #PrisonDecongestion #Nigeria #ProBono

@AbdulMahmud01 If you didn't violate any of the bail conditions imposed by the court, you should consider filing a complaint before the Judicial Service Committee of Nasarawa State and accompany it with an affidavit so that this can be investigated officially.

I remember my second job ever, it was an investment bank—it was my first job in finance—my Oga told me to go and analyze a company and tell him why an investor should buy it. I knew absolutely nothing about how to value a multinational company with branches in London and Lagos. Back then, there was no Google or investment sites with Nigerian data. That exercise taught me a lot about cash flow and valuation, which I still use to this day. AI is changing every process. The analysis work Claude is doing is what junior analysts do when they start in an investment bank. They learn by making errors, asking questions, reviewing numbers, photocopying endless reports, and preparing PowerPoint slides. Now an AI will do it in 5 minutes, with no errors. It’s productivity, no doubt, but this will change many organisations.

If APC is stealing ballot boxes, tear gasing opposition agents at collation centres and buying votes in Area council elections, what do they intend to do in the presidential election?

@ovedjerory We had tried to recover the money for my client through other amicable means before filing the suit but to no avail. When the debtor received our originating processes where we claimed substantial damages for the breach of contract, he began to play ball.

@ovedjerory The court is the last hope of the common man. If it's the last, definitely there are other hopes before it. But if all other hopes don't work. We'll see in court. I don't agree that less than 500k is not enough reason to go to court. Last year I filed a suit for less than 300k.

I fight for such amounts and less. ₦500k or less is a huge sum of money to the average Nigerian. I can't say 'No' to helping someone recover their money simply because the pay on the matter would be small. I find a way around it. In fact, one reason I'm locked in on building my litigation skills is so I am equipped to fight for the common man in court. So you can put a call across to me in your time of legal trouble, the kind that plagues the average Joe in Nigeria and I'll know what to do on the spot. The court is the last hope of the common man.

Lawyers really need to start embracing Rule 15(3)d of the RPC. Not every matter needs to go to court fr. Going to court to fight for an amount less than 500k is honestly not worth it.
