I think about this phenomenon a lot, especially when advocating new housing. I think a lot of anti-development/NIMBY attitudes can be explained by how ugly and uncanny much of what we build “new” is (especially here in Ontario). And while people want to blame architects and builders, so much of the results can be explained by terrible land use rules, building code restrictions, and high taxes on new housing that take away from the ability to use better materials, better built forms, layouts etc. A huge aspect of housing reform is about making what we build better quality and more beautiful.
