If you are a working historian thinking of your subjects at all in terms of “IQ” then you are not remotely competent
Nate Silver@NateSilver538
Like how can you be a remotely competent historian without recognizing that major events in human history are shaped by high IQ, high-agency people who are bad and/or flawed and/or dangerous.

Did you know that Medicare does NOT pay for long-term care. NOPE... 2/3s of long-term care for your grandparents and parents is paid by MEDICAID.
So if you want to cut Medicaid, get ready to have your parents move into your house when they need long-term care, because YOU will be providing it.

So much AI hype is due to techies who don't know about anything else suddenly playing literati, social scientists, philosophers, while ignoring centuries of ideas. Certain areas of tech seem to promote a view of tech people as universal intellectuals & they themselves buy it

Seems important that in Fahrenheit 451, books were still “available” in single-paragraph summaries—“read Hamlet in five minutes!”—but the books themselves had been banned for being too difficult. Tech boosters see a warning and think it’s an instruction manual.

Personally, I read a bunch of classics in high register in college. I guess it was fun. I recently ChatGPT'd Aristotle into readable English, finished it around 5x as fast as a translation, and felt I got the main gist of things. idk does the pain incurred actually teach much?

This is coined, "Theme Park Urbanism", where vacation destinations, like Disney World, provide the average American with a walkable environment they can only associate with vacation, and never with their own neighborhood.

Americans excel at walkable, mixed-use development when they’re designing ski resorts.

Remember this? Disney understood 70 years ago what driving (& bad urban and suburban design creating car dependancy) can do to us. “Motor Mania” from 1950. Are you a Mr. Walker or a Mr. Wheeler? #CarDependency #RoadRage HT @LiorSteinberg
