WE ARE SORRY MS DINEO MOKWELE AS THE COUNTRY Meet Ms Dineo Mokwele, who was appointed in 2024 as the Head of the Technical Support Services Unit in Crime Intelligence, a position that qualifies her for the rank of Brigadier. Ms Mokwele is a 30-year-old former BMW mechatronics engineer with a degree in Industrial Engineering and Mechatronics. She was arrested alongside Dumisani Khumalo and other officials in June 2025 by IDAC on fraud and corruption charges relating to alleged misrepresentations in her job application and vetting process. As Mokwele's qualifications were presented before the Madlanga Commission, including a National Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering, a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering, and evidence that she is studying towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Johnson conceded that she had relied on incorrect information from her investigative team when approving the prosecution. Advocate Johnson, who approved the prosecution memorandum that led to Mokwele's arrest in June last year, acknowledged that she had neither reviewed Mokwele's job application nor examined her qualifications before signing off on the case. She also told the Commission that she was unaware that Mokwele is studying towards a Master of Business Administration (MBA). The prosecution's case alleged that Mokwele had fraudulently secured her appointment as the Head of Crime Intelligence's Technical Support Services Unit because she was allegedly not qualified for the position. Now, as a Black woman who was vilified by IDAC, the mainstream media, and media experts who were used to dig an even deeper grave for her, no one spoke for her. No one knows how she coped after state and private institutions were weaponised against her, yet she continued to remain silent. As a country, I say we failed this example of Black excellence, and it is high time we stood up and corrected the mistake we committed. As a country, I say we are deeply sorry to Ms Mokwele. I know the pain you were subjected to by Mrs Andrea Johnson, the mainstream media, and those who handed down judgment on matters they had no knowledge of. We know the real targets were Lt General Dumisani Khumalo, Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and other officials who recognised the value of your skills and the contribution you were going to make towards strengthening Crime Intelligence in this country. We know that what you have gone through cannot be undone, but we are going to raise money for you under the campaign #WeAreSorryDineoMokwele. No amount of money can erase the pain, humiliation, and suffering you endured, but it can serve as a symbol of our remorse and our commitment to acknowledging the injustice you experienced.
