@barry_joyce Historically most areas had an abundance of rudimentary straw thatch & other materials such as heather etc & often with external fixings, especially in Scotland & Ireland. Ridging was sometimes done with turfs over clay. Water reed is certainly a more recent material.

@masterthatcher2 Thankyou. Were you aware that in central and north Derbyshire the traditional thatch was long straw. Historic photos show it looking rather like a tea cosy slumped over the roof. There was also a tradition of using clay for ridging aparently. I’ve seen this still done in Brittany

On my travels, stopped to look at this fantastic Manor House that we thatched a few years ago. Look at those chimneys and the restoration of the half timbered section looks great! #Thatching.

All our ‘green’ waste, metal waste & general waste is separated out & collected by skip companies. The cost of this goes on our jobs & so the thatch owner ultimately pays.Who pays for the 100’s of illegal waste sites in the UK & why have they been allowed to exist?! #Thatching.
