It is a real shame to see Patrice Motsepe’s reputation being shredded over this shameful and embarrassing decision by Confederation of African Football. This has taken African football years backwards. Matches are decided on the pitch, not in boardrooms. Even when referees make mistakes, their decisions are final, and that is part of the game’s integrity. This kind of interference only reinforces the long-held disrespect towards the Africa Cup of Nations by some European managers, who have consistently trashed the tournament and, at times, refused to release players. Instead of protecting and elevating African football, CAF has handed its critics ammunition to undermine it further.
