Nigerians are praising ourselves for “coming together” to refuse Tyla’s concert even though the lady doesn’t speak for the South African government or its people. We suddenly tend to find our collective voice when it’s about pulling people down or taking out our frustration of the failure of our leaders on others. We did something similar to Ghanaians in the past. Remember “Ghana must go?” Meanwhile, South Africa’s own xenophobia toward other Africans, including Nigerians, has been well documented for years. The nation is fast declining among tourists as a desirable place to visit. I mean, why else would they be giving @Trevornoah a saving face advertisement gig? This should be our chance to pounce. This should be Nigeria’s chance to show investors that we are the friendliest and most desirable destination in Africa. If we can mobilize this fast and this loud against a person or a country, imagine what we could build if we turned that same energy toward development at home. We keep proving we can unite to tear down. We rarely prove we can unite to build up.
