Shifting focus to 2025, RHP Tyler Bremner (@UCSB_Baseball) is one of my favorite College arms in the class. As a freshman, Bremner split time between the bullpen and the rotation and pitched his way to a modest 5.37 ERA with an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 80-to-17 across 55.1 innings. Bremner has a lean, athletic build at 6'2" and 180-lbs. He has room to fill out physically and as he does, his already-electric stuff will only tick up. Bremner has a low maintenance, under control operation with present arm speed. He attacks hitters from a high-three quarter slot and his fastball sits in the 93-96 range and tops out at 98. It has elite riding life (averaged over 21" of IVB in '23) and is most effective when located in the top-half of the zone. Between its velocity and shape, it is a 60-grade offering. He boasts two quality secondary offerings in a mid-80s changeup and low-80s slider. Bremner’s changeup is the more polished of the two, but his sweeping slider has plus potential. In 2023, Bremner’s changeup generated an impressive 48% miss rate. He has advanced feel for the offering, and he will throw it to both left and righthanded hitters. It plays well off his mid-90s fastball and flashes big time late tumbling life and some fade to the arm side. Bremner threw his slider just 12% of the time in 2023, but it has the chance to be a true out pitch in the future. It features ample late sweeping life as well as some depth, and is a real weapon especially against righthanded hitters. It has reportedly taken a step forward this fall and could be a lethal offering in 2024. Between his plus control, low effort delivery, and the chance to have three plus or better pitches, Bremner profiles as a starter professionally. He has a chance to become a household name this spring and with two strong seasons pitching in the rotation, Bremner has 1st Round upside in 2025. (📽️: @UCSB_Baseball)

RHP Matt Ager (@UCSB_Baseball) this spring will headline an outstanding UCSB pitching staff. Jumped into the rotation full time last spring and was fantastic, pitching his way to a 3.12 ERA with 115 K to just 26 BB across 92.1 IP. Was an All-Big West First Team selection and earned a spot on Team USA. Great frame at 6’5” and 210-pounds with some thickness in the lower-half. Easy operation without much effort, attacks from a high-3/4 slot. FB sits in the 92-95 MPH range, regularly touches 96. Averages almost 2400 rpm on the pitch and it shows riding life through the zone. At its best when located in the top-half of the zone. 55-grade offering right now. Ager’s calling card is his low-80s SL that in 2023 held opposing hitters to a .156 average and generated a 41% miss rate. He has advanced feel for the pitch and it has plenty of tight sweeping action. Comfortably a 60 right now. He’s also flashed a mid-70s CB that has big shape. With another strong spring in the rotation, Ager will be well on his way to a top-2 round selection.

Keep an eye on UC Santa Barbara 3B Zander Darby next spring. I think he's got another gear in him. Exceptional feel for the strike zone and budding slug. 83% Contact% and 90% Z-Contact% in 2023. Just a ~17% Chase% too. Healthy batted-ball data, mostly solid average EVs, but it's to all-fields with some flashy peaks. It's a physical frame with consistent triggers at the plate and a short, left-handed stroke that should play at the next level. For the most part he recognizes and covers every pitch too. Did it with a wood bat this summer posting a .288/.383/.465 slash for Y-D on the Cape. Fringy runner, but good internal clock on the dirt and enough arm strength to stay away from first base with continued reps. The Gauchos have another loaded roster, especially on the mound in 2024. Scouts are going to get a lot of looks at Darby and he could be a guy who gets some helium as the spring rolls on.

One of my favorite catchers in this year’s Draft is Ryan Stafford (@CalPolyBSB). Excellent track record on both sides of the baseball. After a Freshman All-American season in ‘22, Stafford last spring hit .313/.393/.500 with 20 2B, 7 HR, and 44 RBI. Also hit .312 in 22 games on the Cape and .345 with Team USA. Relaxed setup in the box, stands almost completely upright with a slightly open front side. Small stride with minimal movement. Very level, line drive-oriented stroke. Excellent job of keeping the barrel in the hitting zone. All fields approach with advanced barrel awareness and plus bat-to-ball skills (90% IZ contact rate). Would put a 60 on the hit tool. Really stands out defensively. Across two seasons at Cal Poly, Stafford has thrown out 22-of-50 (44%) of potential base stealers and allowed just 5 passed balls. Good athlete, moves really well laterally and does an outstanding job of corralling balls in the dirt. Strong, accurate throwing arm to all bases. Plus defender overall. Extremely levelheaded, slow heartbeat type of player. Top-100 overall upside this July.
