In my mind, both organizations have lost touch with the professions they represent and in the NPPA’s situation, they’ve lost a nearly three-decade supporter on the decision. Here’s hoping 2021 decisions will make things right again.

The NPPA’s BOP annual contest eliminated the General News category—one that every photojournalist IN THE WORLD would be able to enter and compete in, like all previous years—in favor of a Presidential Election category, which only a handful of PJ’ers have had access to.

As we wind down in 2021, here’s hoping the Illinois Association of Media Editors will reintroduce the General News photo category after eliminating it last year from their annual contest, undeniably the newsiest year of our lifetimes. Why they eliminated it last year is beyond me

I can’t even imagine the convo the IL APME might have had regarding the exclusion of the most important journalistic category from this career. “Hey, let’s ditch the General News Photo category from journalism. We’ve only experienced a global pandemic, no news to be seen here.”
