@matthewbmurphy @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL It would make sense for the AA private schools to be in 4-team areas. One team would still have long travel times because of 9 teams being in the south and 7 in the north. Other solution is uneven regions, but plenty of folks would gripe about that, too.

I’m confident that AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon and the governing board will be remembered for extinguishing the flame of competitiveness and abandoning any effort at simple fairness and good sportsmanship under their watch.  Rather than allowing CHOOSE act students to retain their eligibility, as the law requires, Harmon and the AHSAA have opted, instead, to segregate our public and private schools, which is punitive, wrong, and just plain hateful. The coaches participating in this boneheaded decision care only about winning championships, not about the high school athletes they are supposed to serve, the lessons about sportsmanship they are supposed to teach, and the simple respect and dignity that students and their parents deserve.

@KingsCoveColvin @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL I don’t care that they separated. My issue is they did a terrible job of making the regions in public and private. Everyone making this a have and have not thing. It’s about families not wanting to drive 8 hrs to watch their kid play.

@matthewbmurphy @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL Play area games on Friday like everyone else does. Play local public schools for non-area games during the week. Private school parents separated their kids from public schools long before the AHSAA ever did.

@CoachLofthus @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL FWIW, I put the Private schools regions/divisions into Grok and in seconds it created three divisions based on enrollment size where no school has to drive more than two hours for region games. Maybe AHSAA should start using AI

@matthewbmurphy @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL Allegedly, private schools are meeting with AHSAA on Tuesday. Will anything change? Who really knows but football is the only one then playoffs all sports. But that is traditional, cross regions, less teams, etc. See what comes out of Tuesday

@CoachLofthus @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL Thank you for agreeing. I agree that most decisions should focus on the majority but you should try to fix the outliers. That kind of travel is an outlier and should be fixed. Public or private, these are kids in school that shouldn’t be forced to travel that much to play a game

@matthewbmurphy @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL Very much agree that it was not well thought out. Told plenty of people that they had 2 years to make this plan and it was made essentially over Christmas Break. They made a plan that would benefit the majority. Hastily, yes.

Wasn’t fair for Hale Co and isn’t fair for LSA. AHSAA should find a better way for everyone. What they did was lazy and not thought out

@matthewbmurphy @JayTownAlabama @willainsworthAL Last year 2 years, Hale County drove 2 hours to 3 of the 4 away games. Playoffs was 4 hours. This isn't new. Go back to AISA if you don't like it. It happens.

It doesn’t happen and it’s never happened. There isn’t an argument to be made to make any family, public or private school, have to travel like that

@willainsworthAL The AHSAA can expect litigation for their unequal treatment of male and female athletes in non-public schools. The legislature has the ability to correct this injustice, stop the absurd penalties for private schools, and have a unified athletic system in Alabama.
