@mhsatman @minigamedev typst really is wonderful though ... hoping it will be the standard in the future, but may take time since LaTeX has a strong legacy.

@minigamedev When it comes to academic publishing, most journals are only just starting to provide LaTeX support. I'll cast my vote in favor of LaTeX.

The first reason I like to write things in LaTeX is because it compiles the text into a PDF, and it makes me feel like I'm coding. I like compilers! The second reason is that it doesn’t leave the formatting entirely up to me.

Grant applications should work more like papers. Instead of Accept/Reject, it should be Accept/Minor revision/Major revision/Reject.

Why do journals ask for copyright forms before a paper is accepted?

@oxinabox_frames I like it for communicating ideas to co-authors or PhD students. I never use any type of notebook for doing actual work. The binder thing and load times makes it less suitable for undergrads. There I use (Observable) Javascript directly in the browser.

I try so hard to like Pluto.jl but its a lot to get used to. I am going to give it til I am done writing my juliacon presentation in it to learn to like it. And am going to try to not run any of the code i want to demo outside of Pluto. It's very different

@matvil I am not sure if this is the reason, but it might be related to the newly discovered vulnerability in the R Language (CVE-2024-27322). We were advised in my department to upgrade to R 4.4.0 and not open data from untrusted sources. security.berkeley.edu/news/cve-2024-…

R-people: what's the deal with so many really standard packages (Matrix, MASS etc) now depending on the most recent R version 4.4.0? Why depending on such a recent version, without fallback on slightly older versions of R?
