@WryCritic Thought you might be interested in Eric! Eric is an opalised Plesiosaur who is held in the Australian Museum beside Hyde park in Sydney. He's got a different case now and is displayed in the treasures gallery.

Fossils are, usually, permineralized remnants of animals where the organic elements are replaced with inorganic minerals (ie. pyrite). In rare instances, the replacement material is... opal. [dinosaur femur, belemnites, plesiosaurus vertebra]
