The future of British defence is inextricably now the future of British AI and tech. Great to speak about how we’re seizing agency to build a secure British AI future 🇬🇧
Max Buchan 🇬🇧@max_buchan

Last week, @ValarianHQ and @lfg_uk brought together MPs, generals, and senior officials for "In Defence of the UK's Future" in Covent Garden. Five years ago, this room wouldn't have existed. Last week, @KanishkaNarayan ,@griffitha , Gen Sir Jim Hockenhull, Gemma Ungoed-Thomas, @danny__kruger , and Lt Gen Tom Copinger-Symes were all in it. The future of UK defence is being written right now. We’re proud to be helping build it. 🇬🇧

🚨 SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENTS Sir Jim Hockenhull, four star General and former Commander of Cyber & Specialist Operations Command, will speak publicly for the first time since handing over command of CSOC. Gemma Ungoed-Thomas, the Director for State Threats, Cyber and Technology in the Cabinet Office, will also make a rare appearance to speak publicly. Jim served for more than 40 years, including a decade deployed on live operations around the world. Commissioned into the Intelligence Corps in 1986, he rose to become Chief of Defence Intelligence, the UK armed forces most senior intelligence role. Jim personally championed an unprecedented policy of releasing intelligence early to expose Russia's invasion plans of Ukraine. Most recently, as second only to the Chief of the Defence Staff, and on par with the Head of the Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, he has helped drive the transformation of UK defence for the cyber and AI age. Gemma leads national strategy at the intersection between security, advanced technology, and resilience. She has held senior roles at GCHQ, served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister on Home Affairs, and led national incident response teams to the most significant national cyber attacks. Most notably, Gemma has shaped the UK’s £2 billion National Cyber Strategy, developed the first Counter State Threats Strategy, helped design the UK’s first National Offensive Cyber Strategy, and co-chairs the National Cyber Advisory Board. More speakers will be announced soon… 🪖 LFG X Valarian 🗓️ 19th March 📍 Covent Garden Get your tickets below 👇

Today, @trymirai is announcing a $10M seed round led by @uncorkcap , with participation from an incredible group of angels including @dps, @FrancoisChauba1, @marcinzukowski, @matiii , @gokulr, @scooterbraun @krishnanvijay , @benparr, @MattPRD, @adityajami and others. This funding accelerates our mission to make on-device AI inference accessible to every developer, turning what requires specialized systems teams today into something that integrates in a few lines of code. Every modern phone and laptop has AI silicon, but most developers can't access it. @trymirai removes that barrier. With this round, we're focusing on working with model makers to bring their models on-device across text, voice, and vision. As cloud inference costs become unsustainable for real-time workloads, on-device execution offers better economics, eliminating per-inference costs while improving latency. Models running on-device are becoming a new capability layer where developers can build system-level experiences independently. Inference becomes the programmable layer. We're building the infrastructure layer that enables that future. There's so much more to build, and we're just getting started. Excited to have Uncork Capital and this incredible group of investors and angels joining us on the journey. More on it at our blog: trymirai.com/blog/mirai-rai…

Modern defence demands sovereign control. 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 Across Europe, defence institutions aren’t just spending more -- they’re demanding systems they can command end-to-end: data, access, compute, and jurisdiction. At Valarian, that’s the problem we exist to solve & our partnership with @SecondFront brings together two complementary strengths: 1) infrastructure that enforces sovereignty by design, and 2) a proven path for operational software to reach classified environments without slowing to a crawl With ACRA, mission-critical systems run inside sovereign virtual enclaves that don’t phone home, don’t leak control, and don’t rely on external dependency. Paired with Second Front’s delivery platform, this creates a clean, auditable route from innovation to deployment without compromising autonomy.

Absolutely mind boggling how UK Headquartered ElevenLabs raising $500M at an $11B valuation yesterday is not in the Financial Times today. Genuinely curious as to how that hasn't been covered.

Yes ofc we shouldn’t be in the business of buying clearly worse products. But the original thread is assuming fairly similar products -- and highlighting that US/Chinese companies are playing the long game and can afford to undercut British companies with loss leaders. And they’re spending a shit ton on lobbying to do it. It’s irresponsible for the government to offshore critical technologies and not consider UK sovereignty and where resilience lies in the software stack given the current landscape. Even if HUAWEI is cheaper. And for the record, the US gov already does this with a ton of programs because they wouldn’t want to funnel taxpayer dollars into the LSE (or elsewhere) where value is being aggregated.

@max_buchan I think the government should generally try to spend taxpayer money to get the highest quality goods and services at the lowest prices. There are a lot of people who think it should try to do other things with procurement, like promote Net Zero or gender equality, but I disagree.

@alexfmac National security questions aside (of which there are many), we need to start aggregating economic value in this country again. As that creates tax receipts for the treasury! Genuinely don’t understand why this isn’t a priority

I think @gokulr has responded to every question I’ve ever asked him in under 15 minutes - one of the best operators I’ve ever met! We’re lucky to have him as an investor @ValarianHQ
Patrick OShaughnessy@patrick_oshag

.@gokulr is one of the most prolific product builders and investors of the last 20 years. He helped build the core ads and product businesses at Google, Facebook, Square, and DoorDash, working directly with many of this generation's best founders and CEOs. He's also invested in more than 700 companies giving him an unusually broad view into how products are built and scaled. Gokul has an incredible ability to give precise and prescriptive advice on how to build products, particularly in AI, and he explains his thinking so clearly that you come away knowing exactly how to apply it. We talk about why judgment is the only thing he believes is truly AI-proof, why Zendesk and Slack are more exposed than Salesforce and NetSuite, and what AI-native startups must do to move customers and their data off legacy systems. We cover everything he's learned from building the most important ads businesses, including the only three ways an ad business can make money, and why ChatGPT may be even more powerful than Google or Facebook for highly targeted ads. He also shares inside stories from Larry and Sergey, Zuck, Jack Dorsey, and Tony Xu, about how each of them approaches product, design, and communication. Enjoy! European Tech Sovereignty is hitting headlines recently as the continent announces plans to reduce it's reliance and exposure to the US. Founder of Defence Tech start-up Valarian (@ValarianHQ) Max Buchan (@max_buchan) shares his thoughts with us on what is happening, and how we can do it well: Ronan: "We should invest domestically and build these companies out, not just pull one out our pocket and say everyone has to use this one now" Max: "We birthed one of the most important AI companies of all time, Deepmind. It was acquired so early on, think about how big they could've been independently".

🚨🇫🇷France announced today it’s phasing out Teams, Zoom, etc. to be replaced with a French/European solution called Visio. The data is hosted on @outscale. Transcripts and subtitles are also handled by French providers. The target is set on 2027 for government agencies. See more here x.com/lellouchenico/… by @LelloucheNico
