#Puntland Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Save Somalia, Back Somaliland or Forge a Third Way? Puntland's gravest strategic error would be choosing ideology over geography. Positioned on one of the world's most contested maritime corridors, where trade, piracy, intelligence and rival powers collide, Puntland's question is never whether to align but how to align without being consumed by someone else's war. Full dependence on Mogadishu is a trap. Somalia's federal center remains constitutionally paralyzed and security-dependent. It offers legitimacy on paper; leverage in practice, almost none. Subordination to the Berbera axis; Somaliland, the UAE, Israel is equally dangerous. That bloc's logic is recognition politics and strategic confrontation. Puntland's coastline has no business becoming a proxy battlespace between Israel, Iran, the Houthis and competing Gulf patrons. The only viable doctrine is multi-vector balancing. Maintain minimum formal loyalty to the federal framework while extracting maximum operational autonomy. Quietly accommodate Turkish naval expansion rather than resist it. Ankara's maritime footprint in Somali waters is permanent; better to leverage it than oppose it. Preserve UAE economic ties without joining any anti-Mogadishu or anti-Turkey alignment. And treat Ethiopia not as a threat but as a landlocked commercial giant that needs exactly what Puntland can offer: Red Sea access. Above all, Puntland must stop treating piracy as a security problem. It is a political economy problem. Illegal fishing, unemployment and governance vacuums are what regenerate criminal maritime networks no foreign naval coalition has ever permanently solved that equation from the outside. The actors that will matter in the emerging Red Sea order are not the militarily strongest or the most diplomatically recognized. They are the ones that control access, maintain flexibility, and refuse to be locked into someone else's conflict. Puntland's power is its indispensability. That is worth more than any alliance.

1960 vs. 2026 Colonialism Didn't End In Somalia. It Just Learned To Say Brother! A week on from May 15th. I told you the negotiating room was theatre. This week proved it. Hassan's mandate expired. He's still in Villa Somalia. The talks collapsed he refused a caretaker government, claimed his constitutional amendments extend his mandate to 2027, and walked away from every substantive issue on the table. The opposition left empty handed. Hours later he was photographed with the Turkish Ambassador, projecting foreign backing on the same day his legitimacy formally ran out. That one image tells you everything about where power in Somalia actually sits. While Mogadishu stalled, the world was quietly reorganising itself around Somalia's fracture lines. In Hargeisa, thousands filled the streets for Somaliland's 35th independence day their first since Israeli recognition with military parades and a president declaring his people had earned their place among nations. On May 18th, Somaliland's ambassador presented credentials in Jerusalem and announced the republic's first ever embassy anywhere in the world would open there. Israel reciprocates with an embassy in Hargeisa. Hassan clings to power with an expired mandate and foreign cover. Somaliland opens its first embassy on earth in Jerusalem. That contrast was not accidental. It was built. Turkey, the EU, Russia and China all met Hassan Sheikh this week every major power with federal stakes still publicly in his corner regardless of what the constitution says. But read that carefully. Turkey needs its oil deal protected. The EU needs its migration and security arrangements intact. Russia and China are keeping Hassan just warm enough to remain useful not because they believe in his legitimacy, but because a friendly face in Villa Somalia costs them nothing and costs him everything to maintain. Meanwhile the American Chargé d'Affaires held a high level meeting directly with Puntland's Said Deni bypassing Mogadishu entirely. That is not a courtesy call. That is Washington identifying its next viable partner before the current one collapses. The picture is now undeniable. The international community has stopped pretending Somalia is one thing and started acting as if it is already several. Turkey holds the federal government and the oil deal. America and the UAE are positioning in Puntland. Israel and the UAE have Somaliland and Berbera. And the Somali people are watching all of it from streets patrolled by tanks and shiny police cars paid for by the very same people calling themselves their partners.

So let me get this straight. A man who revoked legitimacy from Hasan 3 years ago and refused to work with him has suddenly come out on May 21, 2026, making press statements that they no longer consider Hasan the legitimate president of Somalia. That’s strange, because I thought you never considered him a legitimate president of #Somalia in the first place. This, folks, in politics is called desperation. Constantly coming out with statements full of air and without substance. Zero political maneuvering, zero step two, step three, or step four. No Plan B, no subsection four, nothing of substance ready, just constant wailing and praying while believing they can both trick the people of Puntland and Somalia into somehow squeezing this corrupt individual from Garowe into Villa Somalia 🇸🇴 It’s never going to happen. Now the greatest consequences are already being felt in #Puntland due to the spineless weakness and lack of governance, and the greatest threat will ultimately fall on the people of Puntland themselves. Let Nero continue to fiddle while Rome burns.

#ALERT: Puntland Declares Hassan Sheikh a “Former President” Puntland Government has announced that it no longer recognizes Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the legitimate president of Somalia, declaring that the Federal Government has lost the legal mandate under which it was elected. The statement came as Puntland authorities welcomed resolutions issued by the “Future of Somalia Council,” amid escalating political tensions between #Garowe and #Mogadishu. According to Puntland officials, the regional cabinet agreed that Somali stakeholders — particularly influential political and community leaders — should urgently convene to discuss what it described as the country’s “uncertain future” and worsening political direction. Puntland also warned foreign governments and international organizations against entering into agreements with what it called an “unconsented administration,” arguing that such deals could undermine their long-term interests and legitimacy in Somalia. The regional administration further condemned what it described as Federal Government actions involving land seizures, forced displacement, and the detention of individuals holding opposing political views. The latest declaration marks a significant escalation in the long-running dispute between Puntland and the Federal Government, raising fresh concerns over political fragmentation and constitutional tensions in Somalia. Yesterday's post attributes the diplomatic move to the personal and deliberate decision of Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Cirro. By placing the impetus solely on the President, the narrative is constructed to present the decision as an organic, independent choice by a foreign head of state, rather than the result of bilateral negotiations. The phrase our eternal capital is repeated twice in a four-paragraph tweet. The sad irony here is that Somaliland understands better than most the desperation of wanting recognition and that this is precisely the thing it just made harder for Palestine. My conclusion is that Somaliland is being treated as a diplomatic shield and thus the transaction fee is too steep.
