It’s been an absolute privilege to work with the entrepid team of professors at McGill’s Facutly of Science to establish their first ever independent, faculty run union in the school’s history. Endlessly inspired to help workers build their union from the ground up.

When I first began unionizing McGill University's Faculty of Science, I was told it couldn't be done. People are too wealthy. Too workaholic. Don’t see themselves as workers. This week, I'm proud to announce we’ve filed for union certification with majority membership.

I'm editing a book of readings from the 1880s to 1930s that are relevant to current popular struggles around the labor movement, free speech and repression, U.S. empire, socialism, and anti-fascism. If anyone knows of any documents from that time that deserve to be included, let me know!

coaching has really helped me understand that there’s often a long gap between when someone knows and when someone is ready to act. but the stuckness is where progress happens!

Statement from the Canadian Labour Congress re: new federal tariff/trade related initiatives says "there are still some gaps that need to be addressed" but doesn't mention as one of those "gaps" the absence of measures to make joining a union easier or more accessible. 1/3

Canada’s economy is in shambles and the government’s response is to double-down on a wage-suppressing, worker-exploiting program the UN calls a “breeding ground for contemporary forms of slavery.”

Support for unions, collective bargaining might be high in Canada. But a smaller % of Canadians working in the private sector are unionized today than before we had laws protecting collective bargaining. We call that a failure of a labour law model trapped in the 20th century
Brad James@jamesbrad263

Unions are polling well in the US. In Canada too, there's a historically strong public approval of unions. So labour federations here could use that goodwill to make unions' biggest challenge -- private sector union growth -- their #1 priority. I don't think they're doing that.

@27khv This was the subject of a recent episode of @euraknot. One difference that struck me between ussr / other places, is that access to abortion seemed much more universally available. And an absence of other forms of contraception. (podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the…)

The Soviet numbers are almost too big to take in. Over 100 abortions per 1,000 women annually. But what startles more is how far the rate has fallen since in Russia. Last year, it recorded about 338,000 abortions, roughly 9 or 10 for every thousand women. That’s around a dozen times lower than the Soviet peaks, and today the rate sits well beneath Britain or France, lower than the US, and pretty much level with the famously devoutly Catholic Poland.
Russians With Attitude@RWApodcast

The USSR killed itself. Figuratively and literally. 250 million aborted children in 74 years. Up to 8 million per year in the 1960s. WWII, the Civil War, the purges, and other horrors pale in comparison.

Best show from last 5 years that isn’t Succession, Silo or Severance (all of which I loved)? After one of my most insanely hectic weeks ever, I need some downtime.
