Hi! If you're in SF, we're throwing a Love Science x Bookbear Express matchmaking party on May 15th. You'll get both platonic and romantic matches and it'll be a lot of fun. Take the compatibility quiz to get your spirit animal (I am apparently a lion): lovescience.club/events/love-sc…

this girl on tiktok said that “discernment is an olympic sport” and I’ve decided this is pretty much the driving sentiment of my life. it is Not all the same. all relationships are not equal. you Are responsible for your choices. your passivity is just carelessness

“He does not ‘intellectualise’ love, but sees intellect as passion. A desire for perfection, for clarity and understanding and truth, in craft or intellectual studies, is for Plato the other main road to virtue: a starting point, an inspiration, a discipline of the emotions, a spiritual cue.”

“The moral life in the Platonic understanding of it is a slow shift of attachments wherein looking (concentrating, Plato’s more realistic concept of moral spiritual desire avoids both positions. We look at Christ (or Buddha or the Form of the Good) and are magnetically attracted: a tendency of which Kant expresses disapproval in the Grundlegung. The moral life in the Platonic understanding of it is a slow shift of attachments wherein looking (concentrating, attending, attentive discipline) is a source of divine (purified) energy. This is a progressive redemption of desire: and sexual attachment in the ordinary sense can be one possible starting point for the overcoming of egoism.“

I’ve been saying this
ArnenLocke@ArnenLocke

@eigenrobot @EBryceLee @real_dreamr One of the main ways for modernity to understand virtue ethics and phronesis is that it is the endpoint of integration between an individual's aesthetic apparatus and their moral judgement such that the former may be used to arrive at the true conclusions required by the latter.

in 2022 I worked at an app prompting/massaging AI prose into sounding human. looking back this job gave me very important memetic defenses, now that 99% of people cannot recognize the sound of claude’s voice

Someone sent obviously generated AI slop poem to the group chat and everyone over 50 is going gaga over it… im reminded of the phrase from SF critic Darko Suvin re the APPEARANCE of cognition… it doesnt actually have to say anything, just appear to… sobering times as a writer

people hate when I say it’s also your responsibility to stand up for yourself in adult relationships (**EXCEPTIONS APPLY) and advocate for what you want. they’re always like “I can’t!” well maybe you can’t but it’s still your responsibility. who else’s? your boyfriend? your mom?

there’s no romantic philosophy I’ve come to believe in more than “it is your personal responsibility to not create a soul tie with a loser”

I view a lot of relationship failures through the lens of “one person is worse at advocating for themselves/saying no than the other.” so resentment gradually builds until something implodes

when it comes to deepest emotions in life, I’ve learned that I can’t ask people to override what they feel in order to be there for me, and in return I will never override what I feel to pacify someone else. both will inevitably poison the relationship

we all have obligations we’ve acquired haphazardly just through being human beings and going through life. it is an extreme privilege to be obligated to others. therefore pick your privileges with extreme care

i had the pleasure of photographing @noampomsky a few weeks ago when I visited SF. she's a writer in the way I aspire to be one: having your pieces be ambassadors of empathy and connection my readers. i enjoyed chatting with her as much as taking photos for her, because we were able to talk from the depth of her writing. thank you @christineist for connecting us!

minnow is an amazing photographer with a very calm presence. imo everybody has the same fear when someone pulls a camera out which is that they will make you look chopped and then you will have an existential crisis. i did not feel like that with minnow; you should reach out to him if you ever need photos of yourself!
