Those post-communist European countries that opened the secret police files during the 1990s and came to grips with how the oppressive system functioned had the most success in throwing off authoritarian communist heritage and a chance for a fresh start. Those which hesitated until the 2000s had less success and more authoritarianism, and those which never did remain deadlocked in a post-communist mix of nationalism and suspicion of a free economy.

Vučić, who already avoids real debate and relies on a powerful propaganda machine, now seems determined to shape the playing field itself. But there’s a lesson from Europe. Orbán tried the same: bending rules, centralising control, limiting oversight. And still, voters pushed back. Because in the end, when citizens want change, no manipulation can stop them. You can rewrite the rules—but not the will of the people.
