Both Starship 39 and Ship 40 achieved controlled, targeted splashdowns in the Indian Ocean. However, their outcomes differed fundamentally: Differences in Splashdown 1⃣ Vehicle Integrity: Ship 39 experienced a standard disruptive impact when hitting the ocean, whereas Ship 40 survived entirely intact, gently tipping onto its side to bob like a buoy while continuing to stream video and telemetry. 2⃣ Engine Performance: Ship 39 encountered a sea-level engine failure during its final landing burn, forcing it to transition down to a single active engine immediately before contact. Ship 40 successfully ignited two engines initially before stepping down to one for touchdown, yielding a much softer deceleration profile. 3⃣ Post-Landing Data: Ship 39 was immediately destroyed upon impact, leaving only scattered telemetry up to that point. Ship 40 continued transmitting signals and active video feeds for over 24 hours, allowing recovery teams on the Go Australis to inspect an intact heat shield.
