Rich people employ them. A lot. Now some of them sell to AI companies that then scan and destroy them. So they can rent access to them.

eh. When I was involved with libraries, we would take tons of books to get recycled. Especially for periodicals or people who make newsprint. So many people donate books to libraries with no regard for whether they are moldy or not, or even if the library has room. They get recycled after a lot of effort is made carting them around to fundraisers to sell them (or give them away if that is really the best way. You know what I mean.) but to say that this is just a terrible thing is nonsense.

WTF AI companies are purchasing large quantities of used and rare books. Scanning their contents to train models. Then turning the originals to pulp. The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded. Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently. The knowledge survives only as training data inside a system no one can hold, browse, or resell. What used to sit on a shelf for centuries now exists as weights in a model that might get deprecated next quarter.
