At least in one case, Jason Arday received numerous complaints over his lectures. The faculty became aware and a lead academic sat in one of his lectures. Arday defended himself with claims of autism and racism to anyone who dared to challenge him. He left shortly after.

@spikedonline "He became senior lecturer at Roehampton in 2018, associate professor at Durham the following year, professor at Glasgow University in 2021 and, just two years later, professor of sociology in the Faculty of Education at Cambridge" Is frequent job-hopping a red flag in academia?

One thing I've learned from the Arday scandal is that it is indeed possible to run 100 miles a day for 6 consecutive days. ~12 people have. None, however, have done it with a fractured leg, swollen "to twice its normal size". Imagine a system so addled by race that nobody questioned that absolutely extraordinary claim.

@maytree1 @MartinMonmouth Although, to your point - the comparison may be somewhat unfair in that Arday really did steal horse shit and turned it into bullshit.

The Daily Mail has more on the fantasist Cambridge professor, Jason Arday. The article recounts how Arday provides them with quotes, but asks them to pretend it wasn't him who gave them. dailymail.com/news/article-1…

My takeaway from this is Liverpool John Moores didn’t conduct a proper review of Arday’s work. Abbey, who by his own admission chaired the review, does everything he can to avoid addressing a single claim substantively. His only response is ‘we all make mistakes’.

Over the weekend on @timesradio I interviewed Nels Abbey, who signed the letter in support of Professor Jason Arday. Here it is:

Controversy surrounding Jason Arday extends across multiple institutions & is causing damage to confidence in UK HE The independent regulator @officestudents must now investigate actions of Liverpool John Moores, Glasgow & Cambridge Universities 21percent.org/?p=4109

By far the biggest questions in the Arday sage are for Cambridge Arday may well have relied heavily on advice when navigating an exceptionally complex and high-pressure situation How did the police and Carter-Ruck become involved? @officestudents 21percent.org/?p=4109

Key difference is that a journalist was threatened with Carter-Ruck & then the police The press is very unhappy that a reporter was effectively bullied & silenced by Arday As are many others Maybe that's part of the reason why we’re seeing a constant stream of press coverage ?
con questi nuovi ritmi americani (she/her)Free🇵🇸@racheledini1

Consider as well William O’Reilly, who plagiarised one of his students’ essays but remained in post (ft.com/content/ae7f16…). Whatever you think of Arday, the disparity in media coverage & narrative framing of his story & that of these white academics & writers is telling. (1)

By refusing Patriot missiles, which are purely defensive, to Ukraine, Donald Trump is making it abundantly clear to the entire world that he has no problem at all with Vladimir Putin murdering innocent Ukrainian children and their families in their beds. Harsh, I know, but true.

🧵Lots of what has happened with Arday is continuous with all of the other plagiarism and academic misconduct issues in Higher Education. People who are not teaching in HE generally do not have a sense of what we face, so I'll try laying it out. When I have to mark a 4000 word

Cambridge University are in a right pickle now. This guy is clearly a grifter and has completely undermined the academic credentials of the university. If he remains he'll be a permanent reminder to students that the rules really mean nothing so long as you are the right colour, have the right hairstyle and a good backstory. The resulting academic slippery slope will permit an ever increasing number of unfit students to pass into senior academia unchecked until the faculty is stuffed with chancers. However, if he goes, the university will have to admit they were duped, their academic standards are lax, the credibility of their senior academics is trashed and the social justice re-writing of the academic process is exposed as a sham. So obviously they'll go with the first option. Once the critical mass of chimp dons has been achieved, no serious academic will be able to stand up to them. Cambridge will just have become a hive of evidence free 'research' based on feelings, not facts. This raises serious questions for the rest of the world. For example, AI companies which give heavy weighting to scientific journals in their continuous AI training will need to consider whether all research is of a similar standard. Donors will need to consider whether their money is being well spent, and employers will need to consider whether any graduate is genuinely qualified.

There's no point in further belaboring the fact that Jason Arday is a rampant plagiarist, an incompetent scholar, and a pathological liar. (If you've lost @guardian, it's over.) Arday obviously needs help and should never have been placed in this position. Far more damning for academia—and genuinely baffling to me—is the legion of academics who rushed to express their "unwavering support" for Arday over the past few days, dismissing the allegations as "baseless" and "entirely false", while impugning the motives of anyone who dared criticize his fabrications as "racist." (The massive irony, of course, is that they are judging Arday's work by the "color of his skin" rather than by its merits.) How do you watch this train wreck play out and conclude, "Hmm, this seems like a good moment to jump aboard"? How can you be so willing to ruin your own reputation alongside Arday's? That open letter from @GoodLawProject will now circulate forever. Even a distinguished scholar like @sbaroncohen couldn't resist signing it. This is genuinely baffling. How detached from reality, how ideologically blinkered, how self-righteous do you have to be to engage in this kind of reputational self-immolation? It points to a far deeper rot in academia than the case of one pathetic fraud.

I laughed out loud: "The ‘lived experience’ of being a mid-career academic in the UK is not all that different from being, say, manager of a call centre on an industrial estate just outside Darlington: a lot of grappling with bits of software that don’t talk to each other, a lot of deleting irrelevant emails, a lot of meetings scheduled by people who are compensating for nonexistent social lives." dailysceptic.org/2026/08/02/blo…
