A moisture laden system will emerge out of the Gulf this week tracking towards southern #onwx on Sunday. By Friday, a near record area of arctic high-pressure will slide south out of Canada/northern high plains. Attendant 850mb temperature anomalies near -30c at the climatological cold weather maximum will lead to frigid Arctic air spilling across much of interior North America. A shortwave will begin to amplify out of the Pacific Southwest as it reaches coastal Texas Friday overnight. The current Euro run has a high-split with an area of amplification. Which shows up well in the 850mb anomaly charts. This scenario assumes fairly rapid displacement of an immensely cold/dry/dense airmass. This seems unlikely to me. While there will be a split-low. Long wave trofing punching through the back end of the low will favor a coastal phasing of moisture. Still, split lows commonly bring heavily enhanced snow focused near the lake Ontario shoreline. While 5-15cm seems likely along a wide swath. 25-40cm will be possible in Lake enhancement on the west end of the GTA through Niagara. Deformation bansing could further enhance totals along the 401/407 corridor before FGEN phases to the developing coastal low. A high-end scenario of 20-40cm is possible, but at this time higher snow totals look to remain in winter starved areas south of the international border.
