It is widely accepted that the famed Chicago Parking Meter deal was a disaster for Chicago. And it was, but not for the reason people think. Selling future cash flows for a lump sum payment today is not, on its face, necessarily bad. Assuming a fair discount rate was used, the two options are neutral. Neither is a “better deal” than the other. The problem came because the city sold the meters while they were dramatically undervalued. Collections were spotty and parking rates had been politically suppressed. The new owner professionalized collections and had no hesitation to raise parking rates because they weren’t afraid of losing their next election. Within only a few years it was clear that Chicago got taken. Even without this aspect it was still a bad idea (mostly due to the 75 year term), but had they sold the meters for their fair value, it wouldn’t have necessarily been such a bad deal. Especially if Chicago did something smart like invest the money instead of using to plug budget deficits.

@mbhackner @the_transit_guy 3-4 months? Lol no way. Chicago weather is at least tolerable 40 weeks out of the year. March, April, May, June, September, October & November are all majority tolerable to nice. We have cold snaps but winter isn’t nearly as bad as it was 20 years ago

What city or metropolitan area in the world is most hampered by its weather and climate? In other words, what city would be exponentially better if it had the weather of Southern California?

either convert it into a cubs museum with the best artifacts this organization has to offer or tear the whole thing down leaving it as the sidewalk for guys selling peanuts. other options are welcomed but sometimes you need to get back to the basics

JUST IN: DraftKings is SHUTTING DOWN its sportsbook operation at Wrigley Field after just two years. The company says increased Illinois wagering taxes are to blame for the closure. In a statement published by the @ChicagoTribune, DraftKings said: “DraftKings has made the decision to discontinue onsite sportsbook operations at DraftKings Sportsbook at Wrigley Field following a review of our retail presence in Illinois. The venue itself will remain open, but in-person sports betting will no longer be offered at the location. While we are proud of what we have built alongside the Chicago Cubs, we are taking a more focused approach to where we invest in the state. The cost of operating in Illinois, including its high tax structure, makes it more difficult to justify continued investment in a standalone retail sportsbook.” The last day to place a wager at the sportsbook will be May 31.

Tom Verducci on Orioles: "It's not a deep rotation. It's not the kind of pitching staff that is going to carry a team to a 20-9 month to get them back into the AL East." #Birdland

It's dry and hot around Baltimore right now, but it's still possible a few storms will develop this evening in the mountains. If they do, what's left of those storms could drift into parts of the Baltimore Metro. Stay tuned...

"You don't have that bona fide, middle-of-the-order, 'This is the guy who's going to give us 35-to-40 home runs every time,' who's going to drive in these runs." The Cubs don't have a true cleanup hitter, as @DEvanAltman explained with @Rahimi_Harris.

@kylegoon Larger crowds (particularly on the infield) accompanied by music and other festival-like amusements are what make the Preakness the unique “people’s race.” Maybe Williams doesn’t care to associate with actual people having fun in a manner than doesn’t suit him?

Turn the DraftKings Sportsbook at Wrigley into either a giant Goose Island Taproom or a fancier Captain Morgan Club and bring back some of the old Wrigleyville vibes.

@RealShawFather Pretty clear they’re trying to stretch out Brown to be a SP; he’d slot at #3 the way the rotation is shaping out. Not sure you can fully trust Boyd or even Shota in the 2nd half based on age and conditioning (both faded in ‘25). Je’Carter have their work cut out for them.

The only starter worth a shit for the Cubs currently is Shota. -Rea and Brown are not reliable long-term starters. -Taillon sucks. -Cabrera gives up way too many hits and hard contact. Gonna need to trade for probably two starters at the deadline and not Mike Soroka guys.

Craig Albernaz was asked if the Orioles should try for less hard contact & focus on putting more balls in play. His answer: No, “I think we all know in this game, especially at this level, when you hit the ball soft, it’s probably not going to be a hit.” baltimoresun.com/2026/05/16/ori…
