Not many teams in the NHL that will be able to keep up with how efficiently this team can get up the ice and be a threat in transition. At some point throughout the game, this gets exhausting to defend the speed they continue to transition with.
Jamieson McVicar@mc_mcvicar

MN Wild Transition: The Wild were already a high level puck moving team in transition. With the addition of Quinn Hughes, this teams transition game might have just become ELITE. As Hughes continues to build chemistry with MN, their transition offense will be SCARY. 👀🧵

4 years ago I started my first season as Graduate Assistant at OU. I got to spend two seasons with the senior class who just won it. I remember vividly after my last game coaching at OU, this group promising me they were going to get it done. Well, they did it. So proud.

Again here you see MN #97 recognizing that they have outnumbered a 50/50 puck and will likely regain the possession. This allows him to find quiet ice and anticipate a scoring chance directly out of the re-gaining of possession. This is not "cheating" this is recognizing adv.

Spacing to Re-Attack: One thing I find intriguing and underrated about really good offensive teams is their spacing to re-attack off of turnovers in the offensive zone. Check out MN #91 working to space off the turnover and MN #36 immediately making the play into high danger.

Interior 2v1: Working off the puck carrier to identify space where a 2v1 on the interior can be created. The puck carrier dictates the play, but the responsibility is on the off puck players to identify the advantage and create danger.

MN Wild OZP Draw 2v1: In conceptual and principles based offenses, it is highly encouraged to identify and create 2v1's, these serve as a domino to trigger offensive attack. Sometimes these 2v1's develop slow. Love the patience by Hughes and the recognition by Kaprizov here.

MN OZP: Consistent with the principles represented in @MacLennan28 clips. Off puck spacial exchange creates both a downhill attack and a seam look. In both teams OZP the play without the puck is key to the offensive threat they can create. Rotate. Spread. Threaten.

BUF OZP Working off the puck and exchanging space to create interior passing options and seams BUF is able to draw, manipulate, and collapse defensive coverage through that movement, creating and exploiting advantages when they appear

Confidence in high ice: Modern offensive zone play requires comfortability from all five players above the hashmarks. Here, WASH spends 20+ seconds with possession in high ice. Players exchange space, create available passing options through movement, and identify threat.

MN Wild OZP Reverse Cut Through: Intrigued by this revers cut through concept used by MN #12 to create a quick 2v1 with MN #43 from the high slot. This one does not result in a scoring chance but I can see this concept being a threat. Get to 3 high look. Target your 2v1.

As you start to break it down, the dominoes we are looking to create in our O-zone attacks, are similar concepts we are looking to create in transition Play possession games, vary the space available to the players, make them get the puck from point A to point B with possession

Watching more of Minnesota transition has sparked some thoughts. @drewcarlsonhp made a great point while watching it. "It's almost like they have taken their offensive zone concepts and extended it into their transition play" Principles of OZP extended in transition play 👀🧵

@drewcarlsonhp Finish your route for available plays to space: As soon as puck support is recognized, players can continue their routes into space to continue threat in transition. Isolate a 2v1 to play up the ice. Middle pass creates space to outside. Kick it to space with D continuing route.

@drewcarlsonhp Working to isolate one player or one side of the ice: Here, they work to isolate one 2v1 throughout their transition. Once they have one 2v1 isolated (found a domino) they attack that player to transition the puck up the ice.

Drawing the first layer of forecheckers to create space between FC and D: Very similar concept to OZP, extend first layer in high ice, create space between first layer and second layer, play to the space you have created. Maintain possession to draw space to transition.
Jamieson McVicar@mc_mcvicar

@drewcarlsonhp Working to create numbers advantages: All five players reload to support the puck carrier and create numbers advantages. MN #97 works back to create 3v2 with defense. MN #36 draws 2v1 on reception then plays the puck to the space he just vacated. Another 2v1 on entry. Attack in.
