An Azerbaijani living in Istanbul publicly burned the Armenian flag, claiming that he was doing it “for all Muslims, #Turkey and #Azerbaijan.” The striking part is that the person behind this act was not Turkish, but Azerbaijani — yet he tried to speak on behalf of #Turkey and the wider Muslim world. This says a lot about how far anti-Armenian hatred has been exported beyond Azerbaijan’s borders. This was not just a random provocation. It is another example of a toxic environment where hatred against #Armenians is normalized and even presented as a form of “patriotism.”

Perhaps the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno-Karabak, carried by Azerbaijan in 2023, wouldn't have happened if the world had admitted what happened to the Armenians between 1915 and 1917. "What happened" was one of the most extreme cases of genocide in recorded history, carried out by the Ottomans, with well over 1 million people - astonishingly, constituting the large majority of all Armenians in the Empire - murdered, and the surviving remnant persecuted, tortured, raped, and/or enslaved.

Today marks the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. As we honor the 1.5 million Armenians murdered by the Ottoman Empire across modern-day Turkey, Syria, and Armenia, we must refuse to let history repeat itself. In 2020, the military forces of Azerbaijan and Turkey attacked the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh. In 2023, Azerbaijan expelled over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, continuing the genocidal campaign that had begun over 100 years prior. On this day of remembrance, we reaffirm the right of the Armenian people — and all people — to freedom, safety, and self-determination.

Israel has appointed a Special Envoy to the Christian world, George Deek, an Israeli-Arab Christian of Armenian heritage who served as Israel's ambassador to Azerbaijan during the time when Azerbaijan ethnically cleansed Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. Deek refused to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide. He said nothing as Azerbaijan demolished churches and drove his own people from their land. Worse, he celebrated the complete ethnic cleansing of Armenians from Zangilan and Karabakh. This is the man Israel chose to speak for Christians.
