Happy Independence Day. Independence or Resistance forever

On October 1, 1961, the former British territory, Southern Cameroons got independence and reunited with East Cameroon, French Cameroon. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, President Paul Biya reminded the people of the significance of Buea.

The foundations for this reunification were never quite settled, an are the source of what we know today as the anglophone crisis. In 1972, the federation was dissolved into a unitary state called the United Republic of Cameroon, keeping the 1961 borders which still exist today.

Then in 1984, President Biya, by decree, erased traces of the union and renamed the country La République du Cameroun, which was the name of one of the states that came into the federation in 1961.

It was that same year 1984 that Fon Gorgi Dinka, a lawyer, announced the independence of former Southern Cameroons and gave it the name Ambazonia, from Ambas Bay.
