@JerodMcDaniel Sorghum Sudan and soybeans. I baled it but it looked like it woulda been a good grazing mix
English

@mdahl85 Would love to talk to you sometime about what you think the budget looks like.
English

@gavin_spoor @untappedgrowth Had the chance to talk with a very successful older guy that farmed and ranched up until the mid 2000s. I asked him if he liked the cattle or the crop side better and he said he liked both but had made far more money with cattle than he did farming

Our local FFA chapter had their FFA week breakfast this morning for the community. Spent some time looking through the old chapter scrapbooks.
In the early 1970’s a large majority of the members had legit livestock operations. Not just a couple show animals for the county fair, but real and profitable herds bred for meat production. A way to learn animal husbandry, business acumen, and work ethic.
Now our entire county is fencerow to fencerow two crops - corn and soybeans. All the hogs are in concrete buildings owned by 3 or 4 different corporations, and the towns have shriveled up.
I can’t help but think we’ve lost the plot.
In the quest for maximum efficiency, we’ve extracted all the value from our own communities. Truck in fertilizer and chemicals by the semi load, haul off the animals hundreds of miles away for processing. The mom and pop tractor dealership who took care of their employees and customers is now part of a 30 store corporate chain.
All for maximal efficiency. Extract extract extract.

@kansasangus @sovernTranch In 2024 74% of lamb consumed in the US was imported. To me that seems like there is demand no?
English

@sovernTranch Okay. Gonna be a mighty short conversation. Not viable.
Per capita consumption of lamb is about 1.5 lbs per year. No demand, no market, no infrastructure, no labor, no interest....
English

How about we discuss the viability of grazing hair sheep as a solution
They could and should be grazed in every solar farm, cell tower and detention pond in the country
HOA and municipalities should encourage homeowners to own sheep as replacements for lawnmowers and weedeaters
Adam Jones@kansasangus
Now that the cow herd numbers are out and the naysayers and folks talking their positions have had a second to come to grips that the herd is still contracting... Let's start discussing what appears to be much of cow country experiencing dry and drought conditions.
English

@cowbroker Coyote numbers seem way down around my place in eastern ND

@JerodMcDaniel @therealgerlach @gavin_spoor What’s the best way for the younger guys trying to diversify to get into the cattle game? Feeders seem crazy expensive. Same with bred heifers. Pasture is incredibly hard to come by at least up here anyway.

@Nebraskero @CowsnRedbirds @CBKimbrell I’m from North Dakota and I’ve had awesome luck with corn grazing.

English

@CowsnRedbirds @CBKimbrell There’s a guy on Twitter from Canada that grazes through the winter. Moves his cows to standing corn when the snow is several feet deep.
English

@Travissnow84 First tractor I bought was a 2294. I still have nightmares about it
English

@NDSodbuster @6Shittalkerffs So that’s fine with you but cattle guys being assholes on twitter is where you draw the line?
English

@funkinator97 This is also my first time grazing oats so still figuring it out too. I am giving them pretty small strips because I think they could get acidosis if given too much
English

@PapaBrian3X @cowfarmerjoe Not completely true. I know of a few young guys in my area that would love to ranch but the barrier to entry is massive. These guys weren’t born into an ag family, but are competing for ground with guys that only want to grow crops
English

@cowfarmerjoe I don’t think we will. The younger generation wants to raise crops not livestock.
English

@leereichmuth Cut my cow numbers in half over the last 2 years. No regrets. Will load up on cows when they are cheap again
