Recently, I was on a campus where an elementary student ran out of class, throwing a tantrum on the floor. I saw him in the hallway and asked him why he was upset. He replied, “The teacher is making me work on stuff I can't do!” I asked him why was it that he couldn't do the assignment. He shared that because of his behavior, he missed significant class time in pre-school, which resulted in him not being able to spell or read, which prompted his outbursts. Looking into his eyes, I saw my sons, but really, I saw myself. I was a student with an IEP, a speech impediment, diagnosed with ADHD, with reading comprehension challenges. I asked him if I could help him read and complete his assignments. He again said he couldn't read, and I quickly interjected, “YET!” We both enjoyed the reading passages on the Sea Otter and her pup. Break the cycle. Be the change.
