I am really fed up of podcast tours. I am fed up of the same people being on the same podcast circuit. I want 20VC to be the place where you listen to incredible people either investors or founders who have built insane businesses but this is their first podcast. Who should we have?

My life materially improved once I realized that the only thing standing in the way between where you are now and where you ultimately want to be is a well-crafted and well-targeted cold email

There are days where everything you have been working on for a long time begins to leap forward in a big way, and this is one of those days. Total nonstop action and the future beginning to unfold. Super rare. Super intense. Extremely gratifying.

@davempayne To paraphrase each firm: 1. Only narrative violations become very big 2. Fuck vanity 3. Heads-down building 4. Obsess over customers 5. Novelty is not optional 6. Founder is delusional in their optimism; somewhat broken 7. Rate of learning is paramount 8. Revenue solves problems

Just putting this out there: something about "narrative violations" from @bedrock, much of the no-BS pure build ethos of @BrickyardVC, and the ethos of firms like Juxtapose and of course @goodstuffnearby feels like a super potent mix of mindsets to have as you build.

@davidcummings Zack and Dhruv are great, and I'm very excited to see them continue to carve out this niche. It is still very surprising to me how few entrepreneurs think about the thoughtful use of debt as a way to grow (as opposed to equity dilution)

Last year, after personally talking to several entrepreneurs about doing something on our own in the private credit space for startups, Zack Mansfield reached out, saying he was working on a new firm. We began discussing the idea and decided to launch a new private credit fund focused on tech startups, called Conductor Capital. To support Zack and Dhruv, we recruited Kyle Porter from Salesloft, Tope Awotona from Calendly, and Nat Turner from Flatiron Health/Collectors. The big idea is: capital from entrepreneurs to support other entrepreneurs. Today, we’re investing out of our first fund and have already closed our first loan. Congrats to Zack and Dhruv on the launch, and please consider Conductor Capital when evaluating venture debt options. Conductor Capital is open for business. conductorcap.com davidcummings.org/2024/09/07/the…

@pitdesi I had explored doing a search fund years ago after spending 8 years in consulting, and found that the space was super saturated, and winning likely required a fairly extreme change of lifestyle (where we would have lived)

@eightsleep I’ve been a huge advocate of yours for years, but going back and forth with your customer service team for three weeks is very quickly changing that. I’ve asked multiple times for replacements, and have been super patient. Please help.

Building is a craft, and crafts require you to not forget the fundamentals. It’s a pyramid of basics building on basics to get you to higher levels of efficacy. I try to always remember this whenever we are pursuing a new milestone.

A bug, not a feature, with retail properties: re-leasing a space can take 12-24+ months until the new rent starts. 3-9+ months marketing 3-9 months lease negotiation 3-12 months permitting and build out 3+ months free or reduced rent But the costs aren't limited to downtime. Commissions are 6-7% of the rent for the term of a new lease - a 10 year lease at $40 per square foot for a 5,000 square foot restaurant tenant could be up to $140k. And improvement costs for the landlord can be $20 per square foot on the low end up to $200+ psf for some. And, for good measure, throw in $10-50k for lease negotiation legal fees. The residential property owner mind can't comprehend this.

@FitFounder I personally just stopped looking at the data first thing every morning. I actually sometimes now only check stats after a few days. I’ve found that this is has worked for me well (and I stopped wearing my ring for a few months for the exact reasons you’ve stated)

Franchising is such an interesting model. We had mostly turned our nose up at it for years at @kingofpops, but Covid forced our hand. It has turned out to be one of the best choices we've ever made. (although we barely had a choice). I never thought franchises were "cool"??? Which are coolest?
