TLDR: I’m starting a new company and I celebrated it by watching a literal rocket launch to the moon. Over the last few months, I’ve become obsessed, perhaps clinically, with making hand-drawn chart explainer videos. I call them @chartsncrafts and they are born from a compulsion to make technical concepts and companies, from NVIDIA to SpaceX to battery, fusion and rare earth metals, both beautiful and easy to understand. I’ve spent hundreds of hours hunched over my desk, my favorite graph paper and micron pens in hand - reading, researching, drawing, filming and editing these videos. It has totally consumed me. They’ve also inspired me to think bigger. In just the last 90 days, my content has been viewed by more than 4 million people. I’ve gained more than 20,000 new followers, and my favorite comments each day are from people who are thrilled to see a real human, using a real pen, draw a wobbly line while still engaging in and excited by all the new technology on the horizon. I've decided to go all-in and build Charts & Crafts into a visual storytelling studio. I have big plans to grow it into a media empire that helps very complex and technical companies tell better stories, beautifully. I honestly think I was made for this. Over the last decade, I've learned the fundamentals of tech + business at Goldman, SVB, and Y-Combinator, plus storytelling @ TED and with contributions to Fortune, Motherboard, the BBC and Fast Company. Charts & Crafts feels like my final form, my own funky ikigai. A few weeks ago, I celebrated my last corporate work day while at NASA, invited there to cover the Artemis II launch because of an explainer I made on the topic. There's got to be something deeply poetic about witnessing a literal rocket launch to the moon to launch a new career, eh? Charts & Crafts is posted across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Linkedin (all @ Natalie Fratto - links in comments). I’d be honored if you followed along 🚀

Costs for child care in the US are high and so is demand. So why are so many businesses in the child care industry still struggling to survive? @planetmoney co-host @mdc and contributor Alex Mayassi join @tracyalloway and @TheStalwart to discuss how common complaints and concerns can be traced to specific economic phenomena or market structure issues apple.co/4lTgFT6

On the latest Planet Money @BobbyAllyn and @mdc spoke with prediction markets' most vocal advocate and detractor, and a bunch of traders who've gone the extra mile to find their alpha. Plus, we say goodbye to Mary Childs in a very Planet Money fashion... npr.org/2026/04/17/nx-…

I usually end up mostly reading fiction because it's easier and more fun than most nonfiction. But I read "And the Band Played On" recently and loved it. Incredibly info-dense, but extremely well-written and page-turning. Any recs for other great readable nonfiction like this?

Yes. A more positive spin is that finance is perfectible repetition. If there are dramas, and there are, they are experienced quietly. But by and large, they are made of basic human stuff. Someone needs to write an empathetic bottle episode about a portfolio manager defeated by a long drawdown. Or the pricing subsystem failing. Or getting the earnings right and still losing money. Or losing an analyst. Or seeing an analyst bloom. Or the personal tragedies (people die) that can’t be shared at work. Or the petty office politics. Instead, we get a sadomaso prosecutor, or a nonbinary impact investor. So dumb. Who writes these things anyway?

That’s primarily because finance is boring as hell, it’s a miracle to get 20 minutes of entertainment out of it

On the market for tariff refunds from @mdc @planetmoney : “Companies have been selling the refund they would get (in whole or in part) IF it turned out the tariffs were illegal AND refunds become a thing. It’s still not totally clear what will happen for the second half of that, but we’ve now cleared the hurdle for the first half…” offtherun.substack.com/p/on-the-marke…
